The people have spoken and it was a neck and neck battle to the finish. There were plenty of votes for such luminaries as Nonna and Lucia, but the real battle for reader’s favorite was between The Grape on Greenville Avenue and Parigi on Oak Lawn. Continue reading

Fried Pies and Food Trucks: Bless Us Baby Jesus
In the heat of the Rally moment, we are sincerely looking forward to what will probably be a mob scene at the Greenville Avenue Sigel’s Saturday night.
There has been plenty of tongue wagging in the blogosphere concerning the Dallas Food Truck Rally, certainly we are included in that feeding frenzy. While we have all read plenty about the many participants, little has been said about The Bomb Fried Pies. They freaking make a guacamole fried pie. That is a serious pie worth talking about. America’s Best Bites Visits Dallas
by Steven Doyle
In the wee hours last night we spoke to the associate producer for a new television program, America’s Best Bites, which will soon air across the country and in Dallas on KDAF CW 33. The half hour program will run in most major markets and combines two of our favorite things: food and travel.
The hosts, Ted Brunson and Natalie Forte, are on a mission each week to find affordable dishes and must-eat items across America, based primarily on viewer feedback from Facebook and Twitter. The new program is to be charged with a sense of humor and audience participation. Excellent tips from viewers will be rewarded with on-air cameos and other forms of incentives. Continue reading

Down the Hatch
by Steven Lindsey photos by Rod Orta
Next to Christmas, opening day of the State Fair, and that new-car smell, one of my favorite things in the world is Hatch Green Chile Season. It’s a brief time of year when one of the best food-enhancers in the world reaches its peak. From local grocery stores roasting the fiery suckers to restaurants creating hot new menu creations, Hatch Chiles are a thing of culinary beauty.
And Jorge’s in One arts Plaza is keeping things fresh and simple with two new menu items highlighting the pureness that is Hatch. What I wasn’t expecting was a cavalcade of cocktails courtesy of Nacho, the creative genius behind a new era of creativity behind the Jorge’s bar. The drinks just kept coming. And coming. And coming. The New Faces at Bolsa
Last evening I found myself marching into Bolsa for their weekly cocktail challenge where they ask their Facebook friends to suggest ingredients. I always suggest “a duck” in the same voice of Arthur Pendragon as portrayed in Monty Python’s Holy Grail, but have yet to see this make it to the menu. There is always hope.
The challenge is simple, the boys behind the bar at Bolsa cull suggestions for a single spirit each week and draw the ideas from a hat. Literally a hat that was most likely made at House of MacGregor, the haberdashery located in the tiny showroom above the Oak Cliff restaurant. From a list of five ingredients the bartenders whip up five cocktails and offer each of them on Wednesdays for an even five bucks. It’s a great program. Continue reading
