Calling all animal lovers! The Humane Society of Dallas County has multiple volunteer opportunities throughout the week for anyone hoping to get involved in caring for and saving the lives of abandoned animals in our city. A non-profit, no-kill shelter, this Society keeps all it’s adoptees until they can be permanently placed in a forever-home and has been doing so for over 30 years.

Getting started is a s simple as filling out a Volunteer Application. Once qualifications and requirements have been met then it’s on a to easy orientation held every 3rd Saturday of the month at their “Dog and Kitty City” Shelter located off Manor Way and Maple.

The Grapevine Opens Grill

by Shannon Roper

I would venture to say that most people who have a cocktail from time to time in the Uptown area have ventured into The Grapevine.

This all purpose clubby bar features the best  patio that is blocked from vision on the street level, and features a covered outdoor bar and gargantuan television for watching games and episodes of Glee en masse. For those wishing for more rowdier escapades, the compound also features a less than half court basketball court that has a galley of tables along the fence line.   Continue reading →

A Fish and Two Goats, Or Why Strangeways is Aptly Named

by Steven Doyle

Last night I was out with a friend for dinner and we decided on Tei-Tei Robata Bar for a little relaxed sushi and sake action. Dinner was sparkling and we even happened to see former Tei-Tei owner and current Tei-An chef-owner Teiich sitting alone at the corner of the bar perusing the menu.

After a few rounds of sushi we thought to have a cocktail and happened into Strangeways, the new brew hall on Fitzhugh very near the new Herrera’s and Red Fork. The new bar is owned by Eric and Erica Sanchez and it is their foray into the hospitality business. The bar is festooned with interesting Mexican artifacts and loaded with plenty of  beers on tap and over 100 bottled. A great selection.    Continue reading →

Food Truck Rally Was Sizzling Hot

by Steven Doyle   photos by Suzi Migdol

For the first Food Truck Rally to be held at the Sigel’s parking lot on Greenville Avenue in Dallas, the event went off fairly well. It was close to what we anticipated but the crowd s exceeded what the organizers at Sigel’s expected with swells up to 2,000 people hitting the lines that extended past a one hour wait.

The trucks are on the streets every day in Dallas, some for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Many understood that these tacos and fried pies could be found daily around town, but stayed in the searing 109 degree heat strictly for fun.   Continue reading →

Wrapping Chocolate Conference 2011

by Steven Doyle   photos by Suzi Migdol

The Chocolate Conference 2011 detail was one of those dreamy assignments that from the outset couldn’t possibly suck, and the name lived up to all expectations. This past Saturday morning, and on into the late afternoon, a hoard of chocophiles lined up and paid their small entry fee into the event that was held at the Addison Conference Center with the promise of sampling and learning more about their obsession – chocolate.

Each of the attendees were given a slew of tickets that they could trade for a sample of chocolate from each of the vendors on hand, some local and others who had traveled from across the country.  Continue reading →
