More 828 Action

by Steven Doyle    photos by Suzi Migdol

We have more photos from last Friday’s version of the 828 pop-up bar. In speaking with Michael Martensen, he said that the space is so much fun that he is considering taking the location for his next venture and keep it much the way you see it today. This would be a good thing. We have enjoyed the first week of 828, beautifully collaborative venture between Martensen and fellow barmen across the city.           Continue reading →

Zombies Take Deep Ellum

by Steven Doyle            photos by Nick Bostick

As we fast approach Día de los Muertos, the zombies are becoming ever more restless in their fight to stave off their thirst for blood. To quell the search for fresh meat, organizers closed off streets in Deep Ellum this past weekend for a chance to celebrate with food, music and to donate precious blood for Carter Blood Care at the annual Zombie Walk.              Continue reading →

BubblyQ at the Ritz-Carlton

by David Donalson        photos by Steven Doyle

BubblyQ is a walk-around tasting and silent auction put on by Young Texans Against Cancer, a non-profit organization focused on raising funds for North Texas cancer research, a very noble cause we fully support and endorse. Held on the patio area in the Ritz-Carlton surrounded by Fearing’s  restaurant, it was an enjoyable evening of dining, sipping and hob-nobbing with beautiful Dallasites.

We had several favorites with the food, led off by recently-resigned Scott Romano of Charlie Palmer and his rendition of rabbit agnolotti in parmesan broth with root vegetables. It was full of flavor, hearty and earthy and went well with Cotes du Rhone Village being poured at the bar.    Continue reading →

828 Opens With a Splash

Brian McCullough and Michael Martensen

by Steven Doyle

Last evening we popped into 828, the pop-up speakeasy in Oak Cliff that benefit’s the Promise House, and found a whole host of DFW cocktail legends behind and in front of the bar.

The brainchild of Michael Martensen and Eddie “Lucky” Campbell who will soon open their own bar tentatively entitled Rock and Rye, are using the lounge as a launch pad for the bar and to raise funds for the charity.   Continue reading →

We Have a Craving for Cars

by Bryan Coonrod

I for one love classic cars (the older the better), so while strolling through the state fair automotive building I notice a wing of a Plymouth Road Runner Super Bird sticking above the rest of the new cars displayed. As I get closer a 1968 Lamborghini Miura grabs my attention with its pistachio color gleaming under the lights.

My curiosity begins to wonder why they are at the fair and I find out these cars are part of the Texas Museum of Automotive History opening to the public Nov 15th after the fair ends and boasting a display of cars worth $30 million it is truly a car lovers paradise. TMAH’s goal is to be one of the top 10 museums in the world.           Continue reading →

Chef Romano Resigns at Charlie Palmer

by Steven Doyle    photo by Robert Bostick

Chef Scott Romano will be leaving Charlie Palmer at the Joule (we consider one of the best in Dallas) to work as a personal chef and eventuially will pursue his dream to open a restaurant in the Dallas area with the assistance of Charlie Palmer himself. We wish Romano the very best. He will be married November 11, 2011 (11-11-11) .          Continue reading →

Cooking with Nicole

by Steven Doyle

We checked in with chef Nicole to find out what she has planned for the coming weekends at her underground dinners and she did not disappoint.

For this weekend expect more locally grown produce in the way of carnival squash, Japanese sweet potatoes, pears, chard, purple hull peas, onions and reed avocados. The 7-course tasting menu will also highlight a cheeseboard from Ali Morgan of Scardello fame, and local grass-fed beef.    Continue reading →

Four Lounge Keith LaBonte Mixes It Up

by Steven Doyle

Last night we ventured into Four Lounge to visit with barman and proprietor Keith LaBonte. For those that have not yet made their way into the State and Allen lounge, you are missing one of the better cocktails made in the city.

Plenty of props to Lucky, Martensen, Jason and the rest, LaBonte is first to acknowledge that their skills are top-notch. However, LaBonte will note that his style of mixing is polar opposite of the sweeping Prohibition-style cocktail that you will find at Cedars Social or even the new pop-up bar that is opening tonight called 828.                                 Continue reading →
