Last Week For a Fletcher’s Corny Dog!

by Steven Doyle

As the Texas State Fair continues in its final full week we felt it time to actually try a few Fair staples and venture out onto the Midway with a loosened belt. No visit to the Fair is complete without a visit to Fletcher’s Corny Dogs. We searched around for Gregory True, the manager of the large Fletcher stand that sits perched next to Big Tex, but we were told the 18 year veteran of the Fair was hospitalized and missed the Fair this year.     Continue reading →

Vegan Girl Goes to the Texas State Fair

by Melissa Brenner

For as many years as I have lived in Dallas, I’ve never made it out to the Texas State Fair. I’ve been horrified by the advertised food options, which is the main reason I’ve never attended. This year I decided to try my luck, and clog my arteries, with the search for vegan food at Texas State Fair.

I was hopeful that there would be something that I would be able to eat when I heard, from our very own Steven Doyle, that there would be a number of veggie and even vegan chefs featured in the Celebrity Chef exhibition. Surely, if there was draw to see the likes of Chef Toria Villareal of VSPOT Café, Chef Miranda Martinez & Evita Torez of Vivaraw.com and Chef Jeanette Prafiska of Crosby Catering and Coffee then there was a good chance someone there would be making something for me.   Continue reading →

Ali’s Cheese Pick of the Week

by Ali Morgan

We have enjoyed working with Ali Morgan from Scardello so much in the past as she helps us with cheese, and even beer selections, that we have asked her to to write a weekly column on both beer and cheese.  I think you will enjoy her picks.  We hope she is able to write a weekly column, but the spunky girl stays hopping busy so forgive her if she misses a few deadlines.

The first cheese I want to showcase is one of my favorites, Tea Hive by Pat Ford from the Beehive Cheese Company out of Utah. I have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to hang out with Pat several times since I first dove into the cheese world in 2009, and let me tell you, he is just as brilliant as his cheese is! Pat has several award winning cheeses, including Barely Buzzed, Full Moon, Promontory, Sea Hive, and our featured cheese, Tea Hive.    Continue reading →

Sky Fish to Open at Cityville

by Steven Doyle

We had a chance to speak with Kathleen Ellington of Kathleen’s Sky Diner this weekend and she said she is planning a new restaurant that should be ready in soon.  The Cityville Oak Park complex, which houses some very exquisite town homes, had been looking for a new restaurant to open on the street level and Ellington found the location too wonderful to pass up. Ellington said the new restaurant will be called Sky Fish in keeping with her astral theme.

“We will never duplicate the Sky Diner because it takes too much to reproduce.  We tried in Plano and found that it really takes ownership being there around the clock to function properly,” said Ellington.    Continue reading →

MFA Event & Texas Veggie State Fair

What’s better than one vegan charity event in Dallas? Two!

Mercy For Animal’s Executive Director, Nathan Runkle, will be in town to host MFA’s charity event on October 22nd. From 7-10pm Sons of Hermann Hall (3414 Elm St., Dallas, TX) will be filled with vegans, vegetarians and animal lovers of all diets. The event will be a kick off for the Texas Veggie State Fair and raise funds to support the MFA efforts in the DFW area.

There are lots of great things going on at this event. The all vegan menu will be catered by your known favorite,

Spiral Diner, your yet to be known favorite to be, VSPOT Vegan Café, and the amazing Crosby Catering & Coffee. These three names alone should have you headed to buy your tickets. This is a great chance to get a sneak preview of some of the VSPOT menu items before they open and sample the veggie-liscious stylings of Chef Jeanette Prasifka (check out her Celebrity Chef demonstration at the Texas State Fair Tuesday October 18th at 2:30).     Continue reading →
