Malaysian Cuisine Returns To Dallas

05_2011_01_Blue_Ginger-71-Editby Andrew Chalk

Fans of Malaysian food will remember Blue Ginger Garden in Plano, which closed in January of last year. The couple behind that one-of-a-kind place are coming back and opening Asian Delights Café a short distance from the site of the old Blue Ginger Garden. The menu looks like it will be similar but they are making more of an attempt to explain Malaysian food in the context of other Southeast Asian cuisines.

A soft opening is planned on May 1st but when I checked the web site was not yet up so there may be last minute delays.

The Judge’s Table: Urbano Cafe

urbanoby David Indorf

Under the able hand of Chef Ke’o Velasaquez, Urbano Café grew into one of the city’s dining meccas, a not-so-well-kept secret among Dallas foodies.  Affable owner Mitch Kauffman and his capable staff keep the tiny space humming in a swirling but efficiently choreographed ballet, the restaurant’s intimate interior lending itself to not infrequent exchanges of BYO wine bottles between tables populated by strangers.  The noise level can be difficult at times, but diners don’t go to Urbano for pinky-out dining; they go for impeccably prepared food that never fails to satisfy.          Continue reading →

Cooking Classes at 3015:Week 6 (Final)

TGdessertsby Robyn Folmar

Monday was the final night of the 3015 Trinity Groves Cooking School and I ate three desserts for dinner. We made éclairs, crème brûlée and a lemon tart with shortbread crust, which I’m pretty sure beats the bowl of Rice Chex and almond milk you threw down.

After the team huddle, we started on the shortbread crust for the tart since it needed time to assemble, chill, bake and then cool. Basically this is just a giant shortbread cookie that is topped with a tangy and sweet lemon curd.  If you get a bag full of soul-crushing dry lemons, microwave them for a few seconds to loosen them up before you break your fingers trying to release the juice. It’s a good tip and works.   Continue reading →
