Park Tavern Closed For Non-Payment Of Rent
Park Tavern, one of the last of the Restaurant America restaurants in Dallas, closed yesterday from what we are told is non-payment of rent. Located at 8166 Park Lane in the Shops of Park Lane, the restaurant offered some unusual takes on typical bar fare, including the “animal tots” which was an early version of Dallas poutine. More recently Central Standard shuttered. Continue reading

James Beard Foundation’s “Taste America” Comes To Dallas
This could be the dinner of the year. The James Beard Foundation is touring just ten American cities with their 2014 Taste America event and Dallas made the cut (the only Texas city to do so). No fewer than seven chefs who have either won or been nominated for a James Beard award, or have been invited to cook at the James Beard house in New York, will prepare food for a lavish reception and dinner dubbed A Night of Culinary Stars to be held at the Hilton Anatole Hotel’s glorious Wedgewood Room on Friday September 26th. Proceeds from the event benefit the James Beard Foundation and Café Momentum, the local project that endeavors to give crucial job skills in the food service industry to at-risk young men from Dallas County Youth Village. Okrapalooza 2014 Recap
Okrapalooza was a tasty hit this past Sunday as many chefs and home cooks gathered to create the most interesting use of okra ever thought possible. From the sweet to the savory, these kitchen masters made their favorite okra dishes to benefit the Promise of Peace Garden. Promise of Peace offers neighborhood children classes in horticulture, summer camp and education in nutrition through their community garden. They also provide opportunities for families to access a better life through participating in our cooking and gardening classes and other events.
This year’s event was by far the most successful than in past years with serious chefs rallying for the cause. Chef Thomas Archer from 3015 and his sous chefs team “Okra Winfrey” took first place this year. It was a difficult event to challenge with so many imaginative entries. Here are some scenes from Okrapalooza 2014 which took place at The Lot in East Dallas: Continue reading

Sweet Success at the Dallas Chocolate Festival
DallasChocolate.org was started in June 2009 by Sander Wolf to promote artisan chocolate in Dallas, Texas. A big component of that is educating people about how complex and yet how accessible hand crafted chocolate can be. The 5th annual Dallas Chocolate Festival was held September 13th at the Addison Conference Center and featured samples from approximately 50 chocolatier’s and chocolate makers. Continue reading

Getting Your Indian Fix At Chaat Cafe
by Steven Doyle
Chaat Café is billed as a fresh and casual Indian fast food restaurant, but there is absolutely no resemblance to what you might consider fast food. The food is served in the same relative time as any other restaurant, and is hand-made to order with precision and care. The concept is a national chain, but each location has a local flair. Since Irving has a tremendous Indian population, it is very popular with the locals.
The menu at Chaat is fairly extensive with a full line of chaat, or Indian nibbles such as Pani Puri (crisp shells stuffed with potatoes and garbanzo beans) or a variety of Pakora and Samosas.
