Owner of Rao’s, Frank Pellegrino Died This Week

frank

The owner of New York City’s famed Rao’s Italian restaurant, reputedly the toughest place in the Big Apple to get a table, died this week after a bout with lung cancer. Frank Pellegrino Sr. was 72.

The restaurant has thrived in Harlem, through some of the neighborhood’s most dangerous times, since 1896. It features only 10 tables, and follows one of the most unusual seating policies in the industry. Seven of the 10 (two of which were added during a relatively recent renovation) are “owned” by regular customers. Those patrons in essence have a right of first refusal. They can come every night, lend the table to friends, or donate the seating for charity auctions.   Continue reading →

Bone Daddy’s Barbecues The Breastaurant

DSC06216By Steven Doyle

When Mike Leatherwood opened his first Bone Daddy’s House of Smoke in Dallas he wasn’t looking at operating a breastaurant, but somehow along the way he was lumped into that category. He had an all female waitstaff wearing skimpy clothing, so technically that would throw him into the company of Hooters. Interesting enough, the gimmick was to be temporary while he perfected the Addison-based business. More recently Leatherwood re-engineered the uniforms to be more tailored and less revealing. What is left is some really good barbecue, hand-made the old fashioned way.

On a recent visit we learned that training was supreme importance for Leatherwood, and has a two day program where he empowers employees through his personal life coach. It is this treatment that nets a amiable employee and extremely low turn over.

Then there is the barbecue.       Continue reading →

Take Flight to El Tesoro del Inca

by Steven Doyle

Peru is the epicenter for much that we enjoy today. The simple potato has its origins to the Andes and nearly every potato found worldwide can be traced back to Peru. The humble peanut made its way to Africa via the Spaniards, and vast variety of corn stems from the region. One variety of corn is an inedible purple kernel that the natives to Peru make into a sweet drink called chicha morada which can be found at a local restaurant, El Tesoro del Inca.

We stopped into El Tesoro recently after being tipped off to its whereabouts. It sounds so secretive, but when you check the restaurant out you will see what we mean. It is a bit hidden in a small shopping center off Beltline in Irving. If you are not paying much attention you will miss the spot altogether.       Continue reading →
