What is special about today? One of our favorite hidden gems in the Bishop Arts District is Ten Bells Tavern where they continue to throw down with some pretty awesome food that happens to be in a bar. The kitchen is ever so tiny, but the flavors are huge. Continue reading

Sitting at a bar in either a restaurant or a pub you get to know the line on the action at the establishment. This is the very heart of the operation, and your friendly barman has the scoop on everything happening from their vantage point.
This is also the best place to score some fine vittles while soaking up your gin and tonic after an exhausting day of drinking gin and tonics. Sometimes a meal is not in order, but sharing a truly interesting bite at the bar hits the spot before moving on to your next task for the evening. Continue reading
In the continuing saga in search for the perfect Pisco Porton cocktail in Dallas we came up with another draw this week. As we take down sections of the city by storm our intrepid group set its goggles on the Central Expressway corridor visiting some powerful cocktail dens, including the very new Smyth located just off Knox on Travis.
To catch you up, we have been invited as an emissary of libations by Pisco Porton to sample a variety of cocktails using their spirit. Pisco is made with tradition in Peru using a variety of grapes to develop a spirit as the Spanish settlers did in the 16th century. Continue reading
The Sunset Lounge is now humming along at peak performance. We stopped in for a few cocktails during the grand opening Wednesday evening where everything was $3 making for a rather light bar tab even with a few food items thrown in for good measure. Sad you missed that deal? Fret not my fellow bar hound, everything is $3 during happy hour each day, so enjoy that if you will.
The cocktails are magnificent. Many are throw backs to your father’s generation where they sipped large and in charge cocktails that were stuffed with giant rasps of fruit and cute umbrellas. I love a good retro drink, and the zombie is well worth the order. Cautionary tale: you are only allowed two of these babies and they are deceivingly delicious and full of 151 proof rum. Standard Pour has fast become one of the best cocktail bars in the city of Dallas. Under the guidance of barman and general manager Brian McCullough the McKinney Avenue hotspot attracts locals and industry people nightly. They are looking for well-crafted cocktails without the fuss that can be displayed at other bars. The steady hand of the bar staff is quite evident as they concoct every drink imaginable in split seconds, enabling the staff to move through lines of thirsty guests in a matter of minutes.
Pretty much everyone who reports on cocktails in Dallas agrees that Standard Pour is the standard pour, but there is more awaiting past that bright patina of libations. That is where the able bodied Chef Peja Krstic steps up to the mound offering his version of genius bar fare. Continue reading
Oak Cliff’s newest sports bar – PhD –opens for dinner at 5 p.m. Wednesday, September 19 offering good food, great prices and the best seats in Oak Cliff to catch a game.

The Elbow Room located at 3010 Gaston Road has shuttered, at least for the moment. Long tome employees at the Elbow Room claim the restaurant has actually been sold after a run in with the state over taxes. There is a hearing with the former owners Tuesday, September 18, 2012 over the tax matter and the dive bar could potentially open back up Wednesday afternoon under new ownership. Continue reading
