Tasting Notes To Savor

Savor Dallas should be an important event for Dallas foodies and wine geeks as it is one of the few opportunities to sample this much food and alcohol in a single location and I have to say, the Metroplex came out in force. From bubbles to beer, whites to whisky, there was something for everybody but since I am that wine geek, I thought I would focus on the booze.

At the reserve tasting, it was all about the Cabernet Sauvignon. While I loved the 2009 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru “Clavoillon” for its crisp minerality and soft mouth feel and of course the best in terms of bubbles, Krug Grand Cuvee, with its beautiful bouquet of brown spices, lemon meringue and flan, the heart and soul of Dallas has always been about the big red, three of which stood out to me as exceptional: 2007 Lancaster Estate, 2008 Quintessa and 2008 Hewitt. Snapshot’s From Savor Dallas 2012

We are bringing you some images from another successful year at Savor Dallas. This year Jim White and Vicki Briley-White were in rare form offering events across the city tht benefited a variety of groups including Les Dames d’Escoffier and other worthwhile charitable groups.

Regardless of which event you chose to participate in Savor Dallas 2012 proved to be a unquestionable success. The weather cooperated, bringing loads of sunshine and gentle breezes to Friday’s Art District Stroll where guests noshed on tasty nibbles from area restaurants, sipped a whole host of wines, beers and spirits as the great crowd meandered through the District’s venues. Sullivans Steak and Cake? Yes, Please

Starting today and extending through the month of April, Sullivan’s Steakhouse will be running a Steak and Cake special where you can get an 8 oz. filet, a 4 oz. crab cake and either a wedge or Caesar salad, all for $39. I was invited to come check this out.

Sullivan’s is more like 3 different establishments under one roof: a bar/patio, a dining room and a lounge called Ringside. I showed up a bit early so I could get a feel for the restaurant and the bar was popping. Their signature cocktail is the Knockout, a martini made from Smirnoff Orange Vodka infused with fresh pineapple with an orange twist. I was worried that it would be too sweet but it tasted exactly like fresh cut pineapple with a punch. This will go great sitting out on the patio, listening to the live music. Martensen Schools Us On The Sense of Scents

Ketel One was back in town again to share their love of the cocktail with area bartenders, and to share ideas on how their customers might better experience their craft drinks. Today they shared how the scent of a cocktail enhances the full experience, and how added flavor also adds the extra sensory perception.

To bring home the point, Ketel One offered a class in making cologne and perfume where the bartenders actually made their own signature scent with the help of professionals in the penthouse at the Joule. Continue reading →

First Look: Standard Pour

Standard Pour is set to open its doors officially April 1, 2012. Until then they will host a series of soft openings and friends-and-family nights so small crowds will be able to stop in and check out the crafty cocktails produced by bar manager Brian McCullough and the dining options from chef Peja Krstic.

The main dining room and bar area has been totally reworked erasing all traces of the former tenant, Lotus Bar. In its place you are thrown back into a rough hewn era of undeterminable age. Along with the iron work and rustic bar, there are furnishings that melds with the red plum exterior. Continue reading →

We Celebrate Our Single Year Of Existence Tonight
