People’s Choice Winner For Best Sandwich

Looks like Cafeteria Y Loncheria El Padrino stepped up for another category win in our on-going People’s Choice Award for the almighty sandwich. Running a close second was Jimmy’s Food Store with their myriad of flavor combinations – including the much ballyhooed spicy Italian sausage.

We congratulate El Padrino for their delicious tortas, the Mexican answer to the sandwich that is made with bolillo, the football-shaped savory bread, and a whole host of fillings. Generally whatever the taqueria has on hand can make its way into the torta. Also popular might be the Cuban that is made of ham and roasted pork, or the Milanese that is made with frittered beef.

Certainly the taqueria mainstays remain popular including Al Pastor (marinated pork), Carne Asada (marinated steak), and many other combinations. Continue reading →

What is DFW’s Top Burger?

According to their Facebook fan page Bon Appetite has been in search of great burgers across the United States, and Dallas is steeped up in great burgers. Editorial intern Kary Allen stopped in to Dallas and was directed to Snuffers where she had this to say about her burger, “It’s a mouth-in-your-mouth experience with juicy beef, melted swiss, a toasted bun, and deliciously spicy green chile. Pair it with the classic cheddar bacon fries and you are in Texas heaven.”

The Common Table: Beer vs. Wine Dinner Battle

Imagine the announcer at a big fight, introducing the match-up: “In this corner, coming in shades of red and white, representing the east coast of California, the underdog, Wine!” (Tim Campbell waiving from the corner, smiling knowing he has a great product in unfriendly waters) Then the drum roll begins, with Jeff Fryman walking in under thunderous applause as the announcer begins “And in this corner, the hometown favorite, the one, the only, Beer!”

Okay, so this did not really happen this way but when you came into the Common Table for the Beer vs. Wine dinner, you knew you were in for an all-out fight. Truth be told, both Tim and Jeff were very supportive of each other and as Corey, proprietor of the Common Table, said: “We are here to have fun.” Continue reading →

What’s your Favorite DFW Restaurant? Contest!

Not my favorite

We are often asked what our favorite restaurants are in Dallas. This is certainly one of the more difficult questions to ask someone that writes about the subject daily. Everyone has their favorites for various reasons, and I do have mine. Perhaps each of the writers at Crave should make a short list one day soon.

We certainly would like to hear your top five.

This week I was a bit under the weather with allergies and even lost my ability to chortle. I managed to order a few dishes in the past few days despite my lack of speech. Mainly by pointing and grunting.
