Hotter Than Hell Margarita Fest Success

by Steven Doyle

One of the high points of the weekend certainly was the Hotter Than Hell Margarita challenge in Bishop Arts featuring  Sauza Tequila. Taking place at 6pm this past Sunday, the crowd quickly swelled to over 2,500 as ticket lines snaked down Seventh Street just off Bishop. Happy gatherers met with the promise of margaritas, and although the lines were a bit of a challenge, the crowd stayed quenched with the large variety of the tequila soaked cocktail flowed freely.   Continue reading

Celebrate Your Labor Day in Dallas

by Steven Doyle

Summer is coming to close, but you really wouldn’t notice by the temperatures outside. Perhaps the only indication that Fall is fast approaching are all the blinking school zone signs and talk of the Texas State Fair and all their fried offerings.

Alas, there is one last summer hurrah with a three-day weekend and we want to add to your growing list of pool parties and lake jaunts in case you wanted something different to do. Celebrate with us:    Continue reading

A Fish and Two Goats, Or Why Strangeways is Aptly Named

by Steven Doyle

Last night I was out with a friend for dinner and we decided on Tei-Tei Robata Bar for a little relaxed sushi and sake action. Dinner was sparkling and we even happened to see former Tei-Tei owner and current Tei-An chef-owner Teiich sitting alone at the corner of the bar perusing the menu.

After a few rounds of sushi we thought to have a cocktail and happened into Strangeways, the new brew hall on Fitzhugh very near the new Herrera’s and Red Fork. The new bar is owned by Eric and Erica Sanchez and it is their foray into the hospitality business. The bar is festooned with interesting Mexican artifacts and loaded with plenty of  beers on tap and over 100 bottled. A great selection.    Continue reading

Celebrate Tomatina at Samar

by Steven Doyle

The last Wednesday of August in the Valencia town of Buñol in Spain they hold a festival each year that started in 1944 as a small rivalry discouraged by police, but since the 1950’s has been openly accepted. You may have seen photographs of Tomatina, the largest tomato fight in the world.

Each year the tomato fight swells to larger proportions as the local government began trucking in low quality tomatoes grown for the festival in the 1980’s, replacing the homegrown tomatoes gathered by the people of Buñol.   Continue reading

Yarbrough Recalls Clearview Days

by Jeffrey Yarbrough

Yesterday we posted a story about the Club Clearview reunion that was held this past weekend at Lee Harvey’s, and we received plenty of emails with stories about the event and past recollections. Jeffrey Yarbrough was also kind enough to send his regards and his view of the night. Jeffrey was one of the Clearview owners, and now owns BigInk, a PR firm in Dallas.

This was not your ordinary class reunion. Clearview staff from 1985 – 2007 came out full throttle. Original staffers like Todd Eckardt who started as a door guy and ended up CFO was there. Clay Austin the grandfather of Deep Ellum graffiti who was the creative director closed down the bar with us after painting a black light mural on the back fence and 3 dancers. Jeff Swaney, the founder, came in from Bend OR, other staffers flew from Portland, Las Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, New York and in Texas as far as El Paso over 250 in all attended.   Continue reading

Granada Does Honky Tonk

by Crave Staff

It’s going to be a Honky Tonk Friday night at the Granada Theater and The Double Wide. Kick off your night with some real American Country music starring Dallas’ own Eleven Hundred Springs tomorrow, August 12th at the Granada Theater. Also enjoy music from Jesse Dayton and Amanda Shires. Eleven Hundred Springs has released eight albums since their 1998 debut. Live at Adair’s Saloon, the band’s 1999 release is considered to be one of the definitive albums of the late ’90s in the Texas music scene.

The party’s not over after the concert. The next stop is The Double Wide for the official After Party. DJ Charlie Don’t Park will keep the country tunes going and don’t forget to try Mama Faye’s BBQ. Keep your Granada wristband on and enjoy the drink specials at the bar.     Continue reading

Wade Bowen and Will Hoge at Granada

by Brittany Finnell

Last Friday night Greenville Avenue looked a little different than usual– cowboys boots and starched jeans replaced the typical scene of skinny jeans and v-neck tee’s. As the herds (pun intended) filtered through the sold out, yet organized chaos of the Grenada’s front room and in to the refreshingly cool concert hall (the Grenada wasn’t lying about their renovated A/C) to find the soulful sounds of Will Hoge; a surprising opening act for the classic Texas country artist Wade Bowen, since Hoge had opened at Grenada 4-years prior with the Avett Brothers. However, don’t disregard Mr. Hoge just yet, if you are looking for an artist that has that American guitar sound like the great Tom Petty then you may want to perk up.  Continue reading
