As we roll through our list of categories for this summer’s People’s Choice Awards we pause to examine the new kid on the Dallas food block, the food truck. What was originally met with hellish disdain by the City of Dallas is now being revered (better late than never).

Opportunities for these trucks have opened wide and you may find these kitchens on wheels at most any outdoor event in the city. Some smarter truck owners have made valued alliances with bars and other non-restaurant type venues, such as the liquor store Sigel’s. Continue reading →

People’s Choice Breakfast: Smoke

With a clear, hands down victory we award this weeks People’s Choice Award for Breakfast to Smoke located at the Belmont Hotel in Oak Cliff.

The funky hotel located at the highest point in Dallas has come into its own with the guidance of chef Tim Byres, who over the past year has garnered top honors not just locally, but across the nation. For those visiting Smoke for any meal they will surely attest to his ingenuity in the kitchen, with certain kudos to the Smoke breakfast and brunch menu which features such luminous dishes as a bruleed grapefruit served with the hearty Gristmill Cheese Grits-Hominy Casserole, or the House Made Ricotta Cheese Pancakes that is heavy-laden with a satchel of blueberries. People’s Choice Award: Breakfast

As the summer drones on in triple digits for the 23^rd day in a row, we continue our search for all the wonderful things Dallas-Fort Worth has to offer. The people have spoken about their favorite burgers and cocktails, now it is time for breakfast.

Breakfast is one of my absolute favorite meals of the day. There is nothing more satisfying than an egg (unless you add a burger or enchilada below the egg; my favorite self-saucing mechanics). Continue reading →

People’s Choice Award Cocktail Winner: Komali

There were so many good cocktails on the People’s Choice list that we simply had to take the time to try them all. The people voted and Komali won hands down with a large victory for the spirited El Guero, a juicy concoction house-made horchata, Kahlua and Grey Goose vodka. Another really great drink at Komali is the habanero martini. The spiciness cuts the edge off the Hornitos tequila for a perfect blend of spiciness. Continue reading →

People’s Choice Award: The Cocktail

It can be said with much certainty that the Crave Crew enjoys a good cocktail. We spend most of our week hunting down the next best concoction to quench our thirst in this hot Texas sun, and definitely have our favorites.

Interesting enough, we have seen a trend where really great barmen have trained staffers who eventually fly the coop and go on to lay claim to their own brand of cocktail. This is only good for the city of people just like us at crave, and you who might be reading this today. Continue reading →

People’s Choice Award Winner: Rex’s Seafood Market

We have a clear cut winner for this week’s People’s Choice Award in the category of Seafood — Rex’s Seafood Market in Dallas. The readers of craveDFW have great taste and we appreciate everyone chiming in to vote.

The seafood market/ restaurant has plenty to choose from including Rex’s vast appetizer menu that sports many favorites including mussels, clams, crab cakes and ceviche to name a few. They also have one of the best fish tacos that can be found in Dallas. Continue reading →

People’s Choice Award: Seafood

This weeks People’s Choice Award finds us looking for something a bit fishy. Where do you run for your seafood fix? Be it a fried filet of catfish, tender halibut, or the very best in crab cakes. The best location might include all these things and more.

So tell us where to get the freshest oysters, largest lobsters or crunchy and sweet shrimp cocktail. Crawfish boil, lobster bakes, bounty of mussels and mountains of crab awaits your approval.

What is your favorite seafood haunt? It’s up to you to choose Dallas Fort-Worth. We ask for these awards that you limit your votes to those that are primarily in the category we choose.

People’s Choice Winner For Best Sandwich

Looks like Cafeteria Y Loncheria El Padrino stepped up for another category win in our on-going People’s Choice Award for the almighty sandwich. Running a close second was Jimmy’s Food Store with their myriad of flavor combinations – including the much ballyhooed spicy Italian sausage.

We congratulate El Padrino for their delicious tortas, the Mexican answer to the sandwich that is made with bolillo, the football-shaped savory bread, and a whole host of fillings. Generally whatever the taqueria has on hand can make its way into the torta. Also popular might be the Cuban that is made of ham and roasted pork, or the Milanese that is made with frittered beef.

Certainly the taqueria mainstays remain popular including Al Pastor (marinated pork), Carne Asada (marinated steak), and many other combinations. Continue reading →
