TABC the restaurant, not the punitive alcohol regulative entity, is hosting their second annual Summer Luau Thursday, August 16, 2012 starting at 9pm. This may not sound like the typical news we report at craveDFW, and would normally be a blip as a Facebook invitation. But the announcement claims there will be a live monkey at the event. Carla Hall is the new Martha Stewart. The Top Chef All Star and co-host of ABC’s wildly successful The Chew, has been – like Stewart – a model and finance professional. Stewart was a stockbroker; Hall was an accountant. Both traded careers in business for food and media situations. August 12, 2012 is the last day for the long standing Dallas institution, the Mecca, located on Harry Hines when they shutter and move across town to the Lakewood area of Dallas. If you would like to own a piece of that history you can join them at the restaurant at 2:30pm Sunday when they auction off their bar-stools.

Each day Central 214 Chef Graham Dodds makes adjustments to his menu based on what farmer knocks on his back door and what fresh in-season item they might be peddling that day. Dodds also makes changes at least four times a year offering new and unique dishes that he has been working on for that season.
The summer has been hot and Dodds has been thinking lighter and flying in fresh seafood from his contacts in San Francisco. The fresh seafood also includes a share of West Coast oyster which can be seen as rare in Texas for the only reason that most species of oysters found on the West Coast are deemed illegal in the state of Texas. There doesn’t seem to be a shortage of fascinating people willing to invest in this economy, with many new restaurants opening almost daily. Last November there was just such a person who braved through her dream and opened a cupcakery. Brandy Breaux’s dream was set into motion as she premiered Bliss Cupcakes in the Shop in the Village at Fairview in Allen, Texas.

Just weeks ago I stopped in to dine at Ristorante Nicola on Preston Road. The promise of the new chef breathing valued life into the restaurant was at once exciting and full of promise. Owner Richard Gussoni had just imported CIA Hyde Park grad Justin Melnick to the Dallas area and I thought the restaurant was back on track from what had been a bit lackluster previous year.
