Pop Diner Opens Today At 11am

DSC_0194by Steven Doyle

The wait is over Dallas, you finally have your original 24 hour eatery in Uptown, and from first glimpse you are going to like Pop Diner. The menu is fairly straight forward that is at once iconic yet fun. You will be familiar with most of the items listed on the large menu.

The owner, Nik Gjonaj, is originally from Detroit where he owns a successful chain of steakhouses called Luca’s Chophouse. “In my opinion, Dallas rivals Chicago’s food scene. If you can’t make it here, you can’t make it anywhere. This is probably the best test market in the nation. Also, I just love the vibe here and the people,” said Gjonaj. Continue reading

Belly & Trumpet Opens Feb 12

SONY DSCby Steven Doyle     photos by Joy Zhang

Been watching the former Bowery space on McKinney Avenue? It is now transitioning into a new restaurant the owners call Belly & Trumpet. Oak owners Richard & Tiffanee Ellman are teaming up once again with John Paul Valverde (who recently opened Outpost American Tavern in Oak Cliff) to create their take on small plates and they are bringing in big guns for the back of the house.

Look for Brian Zenner to take lead role as executive chef. Zenner most recently was chef de cuisine at Oak and worked at the Mansion on Turtle Creek. Zenner is bringing in another young gun from the Mansion, Rudy Mendoza who has been working at the upscale hotel restaurant since the Tesar era.  Continue reading

Cafe Herrera Opens Feb 1

The Herrera’s restaurant of my youth seems distant. Long gone is the tiny adobe looking shack on Maple near Oak Lawn across from the Old Parkland Hospital where lines of hungry people sat on their ice chests full of beer waiting for one of the very few tables inside. These folks knew once they made it inside they would be slammed with an aroma of fresh enchiladas. If you were fortunate there would be a woman standing near the doorway stamping out fresh, thick tortillas, and with little coaxing she might hand you one with an adoring grin.  Continue reading
