Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Against the State Fair of Texas

Big-Tex

Judge Tonya Parker of the 116th District Court in Dallas has dismissed a lawsuit brought against the State Fair of Texas by the Austin law firm Riggs & Ray, P.C., which appeared to be acting to further the political agenda of a party that does not want the State Fair at Fair Park in Dallas. The lawsuit alleged that the State Fair is a “governmental body” subject to the Texas Public Information Act. In fact, the State Fair of Texas is a private Texas nonprofit corporation granted tax-exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and is not supported by any governmental money. Judge Parker dismissed the lawsuit under the Texas Citizens Participation Act (Texas’ “Anti-SLAPP” law) concluding that the Fair is not a governmental body and awarded the State Fair attorney’s fees, expenses and sanctions totaling $298,206.59. Tortas Guerrero For Antojitos And Much More

tortaby Steven Doyle

In the world of Mexican cuisine antojitos are a delicious style of street food. The word actually means “little cravings”, and can be found in small markets everywhere in Mexico. This would include tacos, tamales, elotes, tortas and tlayudas. The latter is probably the most unusual dish found, and is made with a crunchy tortillas base spread with beans, pork lard, cheese and any number of proteins such as chicken, or even crispy crickets (chapulines).

Anything hand held would definitely qualify as an antojito.

This week we checked into a “tortaria” in Dallas called Tortas Guerrero, which is located in the shopping center at Webb Chapel and Webb Chapel Extension, very near Love Field Airport. Here we found plenty of tortas which are enormous sandwiches made with a crusty white bread bun called bolillo.

The bread has a distinctive crescent shape and is often over stuffed with a myriad of ingredients, some that you might find in your typical taco, but also more traditional sandwich fillings such as ham.    Continue reading

A Visit To Chinese Restaurants in China

by Sachin Ghare

Several years ago we invited a friend of craveDFW  who lives in India to share some thoughts on Indian food culture. Recently Sachin Ghare shared the fact that he spends time working in China and we asked him to give us insight on dining in China. Sachin explains in general terms his thoughts on the over all dining scene in China. He is currently preparing another version that details some of his favorites restaurants and dishes.

I’m a regular visitor of China and Hong Kong. I have composed the following guide for Chinese dining based upon my personal experiences.  As a tourist in China, you will find a diverse selection of foods that vary greatly from region to region. Chinese cuisine needs no introduction, having been successfully exported to every country in the western world and maintaining a reputation as one of the favorite foods to enjoy either while dining out or as a take-away.

Beijing is typical of capital cities in that it is home to a vast selection of eateries offering some of the finest food in the country. Whereas Shenzhen, Shanghai, Chengdu and other western culture following cities have a bit of a different story.          Continue reading

The Wonderful World of Pumpkins in Dallas and 10 Places to Find Them (And A Bonus To Boot)

pumpkinby Steven Doyle

We as Americans have an odd relationship with the pumpkin. Sure, we stock up on the squash as decor during the Halloween season (which according to retailers begins in August), and adorn our tables as centerpieces with them during the eventide of Thanksgiving, but as far as a true dining offering we fall short.  Continue reading
