20150324_210414_1by Steven Doyle

With just weeks under their belt, the owners of the newly opened Quesa is enjoying a good crowd from the neighborhood at their 3900 Cedar Springs location in Dallas.  Actually the full name is Quesa: Mexican Street Food, and that is as about an accurate description as you will find. Owned by Patricia and Francisco Cabrera, both new to the restaurant world, moved to the States five years ago. Patricia’s sister owns Taco Stop on Irving Blvd just south of the Design District. The recipes used at Quesa are actually old family guard.   Continue reading

Meet Bartending Luchador Jesse Powell

20150303_202515_1by Steven Doyle

I have been checking in at Scotch and Sausage as of late and enjoy how chef Joey Allette has kicked up the menu with his fresh take, and of course always into a good scotch or whiskey. But as we reported a few weeks past, the front of Scotch and Sausage has been converted into S&S Tequileria, preparing some tasty tacos and serving up, of course heady tequila cocktails. The cocktails were of particular interest due to their unusual flavor combinations, and lack of that cloying sweetness that so many margaritas seem to take on. These are instead smooth, creamy and extremely well balanced. To find out more we went to the source, barmen Jesse Powell.

Before working at Scotch and Sausage, and Powell has been with the restaurant from the very beginning, he was working at an Addison sports bar. Prior to working in Dallas he had been in Wichita Falls. We chatted up Powell to find out more of his background and the thought behind some of these delicious drinks he is now serving up at S&S.    Continue reading

DSC06793by Steven Doyle

Soon you will be able to not only have scotch, sausages and some pretty terrific Scotch eggs at Scotch and Sausage, located on Oak Lawn in Dallas, but you will also have a selection of great tequilas and tacos. The owners of Scotch and Sausage invited some of the craveDFW staff in to sample what will be part of the new addition called S&S Taqueria which has taken over the front of the house at Scotch and Sausage.

The tacos will be made by Scotch and Sausage executive chef Joey Allette, sharing the same kitchen, but ordering is completely separate.  Continue reading

The Moose Report – Eating Competition At Taco Joint July 4

jointby Alex “Moose” Perez

The Taco Joint which is located just off Mockingbird Ln. in Dallas will be hosting its 3rd Annual Taco Eating Competition.  This  is always a spectacle to watch as competitors were given the opportunity to chomp down on as many of Taco Joint tacos as they could get down their gullet in a specified time.  Last year as soon as the winner was crowned he was quick to lean over the guard rail and release the winning tacos, much to the crowd’s dismay.  For sure nothing anyone wants to witness, but it is part of what makes these competitions so entertaining to witness.

We shall see what other lovely surprises the competition has waiting for us this year.   Continue reading

Eat This Peter Barerra: Chico’s Tacos

Chico's Tacosby Steven Doyle

The dish of the day was brought on by local comedian and all around good guy, Peter Barerra. Barerra will be appearing at the El Paso Comic Strip Wednesday through Sunday, and posted the good news on Facebook along with a side note that he would be avoiding Chico’s Tacos. He even went  on to issue a “yuck” to top off his disdain for the El Paso taco chain.

OK, I get that these tacos are not the superb street tacos found just across the border in El Paso, but they are a long time tradition.  I spent plenty of time in my youth in El Paso, bouncing across the Río Bravo del Norte into Juárez nearly every night for cheap beer and a floor show. But late at night I would always make a pass through Chico’s Tacos. They are legend in this border city, but possibly best taken in at 3am.     Continue reading

Carrollton Herrera’s Closes But Look For Their Food Truck Very Soon

herrerasby Steven Doyle

It has been an odd day of messages about a variety of restaurants closing and chefs on the move. We just caught wind of a few more. Herrera’s in Carrollton on Beltline is no more. This is a family operation where different members run the various locations, and this closing does not affect others stores in the Dallas area. Certainly one of Dallas’ favorite Tex Mex spots, this particular owner is regrouping. Look for a Herrera’s food truck to hit the streets soon. This can only be good information.      Continue reading
