Our eagle-eyed legal friend Michael Hubbard (you may know his delightful wife Margie of Dallas Eats fame) has spotted a new restaurant in Dallas and this is a place we can all rally around. If you recall our Taco Tour some months back, many of us touring felt the best taco in Dallas comes from Taco Guero. Now find a new location for the tiny taco stand. Continue reading

Nosh Has Class – Cancelled
Join chefs Avner Samuel and Jon Stevens of Nosh this Saturday, June 25 at 10am for what has promised to be a marvelous cooking class and a study into the most timely summer heirloom tomatoes.
We were not given a class description, but Samuels is always over the top. The best part about the class, you get to eat his words. We hear there are just a few seats left for the class. This is a great opportunity to work with this former Mansion alum.
Nosh Eurobistro $95. Saturday, June 25, 10 am. 4216 Oak Lawn Avenue, Dallas, 214.528.9400 edit: An eager reader called to sign up for the class and was told this was cancelled today.Filed under Bacon, chefs, fun with food, restaurant news, Steven Doyle, Uptown, Wine

Vegan Girl Checks Out Central 214: Summer Lovin’
[editors note: Steven Doyle and Vegan Girl checked out Central 214 together this week. Mr. Doyle’s version was run Monday, this is a vegan follow-up to that same visit.]
I love people that love food and alcohol as much as I do, but that is not the only reason that Chef Blythe Beck of Central 214 is on my favorite people list. The first time I met Chef Beck I fell in love with her spunk and sense of humor (she totally allowed me to playfully harass her as she did a cooking demo as she harassed me back paired with some of the most amazing eye rolls I have ever seen). The last time I met Chef Beck I fell in love with her vegan offerings at Central 214.
Chef Beck is known for being naughty in and out of the kitchen. The meal she prepared for me lived up to her reputation and bordered on pornographic. The following is a description of that meal, including the best entrée of my vegan life, so you may want to have your children leave the room. Continue reading

Why I could not be a chef – A day in the kitchen

Cooking is one of my favorite hobbies. There is nothing better than made-from-scratch pasta or homemade desserts. I realize that I am not a professional chef by any stretch but I would like to think I could hold my own in the right scenario. I have even held a few wine dinners at my house where I cooked the food and paired it with wine as a learning experience/fun family gathering. So when Chef Randall Copeland of Restaurant AVA called to have me come out and help with wine service at a wedding he was catering in the Texas Hill Country, I arrogantly volunteered myself to help cook, thinking I could hold my own. Little did I know what I got myself into. Continue reading

Your Favorite Pizza?
by Steven Doyle photos by Joy Jangles
A few nights ago I was at a party that included a more than a dozen chefs from Dallas as we gathered to celebrate a birthday. It was great affair and the beer and sangria were flowing at Cane Rosso. There were enough people at the party that the owner Jay Jerrier opened his doors on his night off.
Towards the end of the evening I sat with a few people including Jerrier and discussed pizza in Dallas. Jay gave me his list of favorites and some of the others made a short list. Everyone seemed to have their special pies for different reasons. We certainly have ours. But before I share my picks, allow me to show you what some others in the area think about the state of pizza in DFW and beyond. Continue reading

An Afternoon at The Grape with Some of Dallas’s Greatest Chefs

I’ll start with this: I genuinely love what I do. On any given day I get to eat and drink and talk about food with people who have given their lives to it. Some of the best conversations I’ve had in this city happened over a plate of something extraordinary, and most of what was said stayed in the room. That’s the deal, and it’s one I have never once regretted.
So when chef Brian Luscher called and invited me to lunch at The Grape, I said yes before he finished the sentence. I knew what kind of afternoon it would be.
