Martensen Schools Us On The Sense of Scents

by Steven Doyle

Ketel One was back in town again to share their love of the cocktail with area bartenders, and to share ideas on how their customers might better experience their craft drinks. Today they shared how the scent of a cocktail enhances the full experience, and how added flavor also adds the extra sensory perception.

To bring home the point, Ketel One offered a class in making cologne and perfume where the bartenders actually made their own signature scent with the help of professionals in the penthouse at the Joule. Continue reading →

First Look: Standard Pour

by Steven Doyle

Standard Pour  is set to open its doors officially April 1, 2012. Until then they will host a series of soft openings and friends-and-family nights so small crowds will be able to stop in and check out the crafty cocktails  produced by bar manager Brian McCullough and the dining options from chef Peja Krstic.

The main dining room and bar area has been totally reworked erasing all traces of the former tenant, Lotus Bar.  In its place you are thrown back into a rough hewn era of undeterminable age.  Along with the iron work and rustic bar, there are furnishings that melds with the red plum exterior.             Continue reading →

NOLA Off The Beaten Trail

By Farah Fleurima

So it’s your third or fourth day in New Orleans, and you want to do something miles away from Bourbon Street in spirit — where to go?

If it’s imbibing you want, away from the boisterous rowdiness of Bourbon, turn up St. Peter Street to find a low-key little locals spot called Boondock Saint. No frills, but also no hawkers standing outside trying to pack the place with partiers. And partiers would flock if they saw the prices here. “We’re a local bar with local prices,” the sweet-faced bartender told me. That meant $3.75 vodka sodas at 2:30 a.m. Who needs a happy hour or hawkers with prices like that?   Continue reading →

The Midwest Trilogy at Bryant Hall

by Katie Minchew

The Midwest Trilogy by Eric Steele was a powerful, in your face display of the plight of humanity. Combining film with live acting, the production is unique and modern. Focusing on three separate stories of the traveling salesman in harsh corporate America, the play really makes me want to stay in small business, and maybe even go into business for myself to avoid the situations portrayed here.     Continue reading →

Savor Dallas Events: Lunch With A Dame

by Steven Doyle

As we prepare for one of the largest wine events in the Southwest, Savor Dallas which starts this Friday, we noticed that there are a few ancillary events that are new this year and help out a variety of food and wine related charities. Specifically there is a Les Dames d’Escoffier luncheon Saturday, March 31st.

I realize that the very name Les Dames d’Escoffier might be alien to some readers, but the international organization is remarkable. It is made up of food and wine industry women that are noted in their field who make a difference for young women by means of scholarships.     Continue reading →

by Steven Doyle

Jon Alexis, who is the owner of TJ’s Seafood Market, and a contributor as well as our go to guy when it comes to seafood,  will be a pizzaiola for a night at Cane Rosso and he wanted us to let you know what he was putting together. That’s right, a fishmonger will be making the pies tonight in Deep Ellum and you are invited.  It sounds pretty damned good. Here is what he is offering in Jon’s words:          Continue reading →
