Dallas Restaurant Legend Larry Levine Opens Loop 9 BBQ

Loop 9 BBQ, a new restaurant concept featuring prime brisket and other connoisseur-level barbecued meats, now offers full catering services.  Loop 9 BBQ will soon be one of the first restaurants to open in Grand Prairie’s growing 172-acre entertainment center, EpicCentral.

City officials behind EpicCentral turned to Larry Lavine to bring the perfect barbecue restaurant to the new development.  In 1975, Lavine founded Chili’s with its first location in a converted postal station on Greenville Avenue in Dallas, Texas.  Today, Chili’s has more than 1600 locations.  The veteran restaurateur knows his Texas barbecue.  More recently, Lavine shifted away from the mega-chain format to found Ten 50 BBQ in Richardson, Texas, in 2014.  The restaurant immediately drew serious barbecue fans.

Our favorite dishes from North Italia’s new Fall/Winter Menu

By Joey Stewart Photos by Joey Stewart

North Italia has just rolled out their new fall/winter menu, and we thought we’d share the standouts with our readers. The spot is known for their house-made pastas and a modern approach to Italian dining. The new dishes center on seasonal ingredients such as butternut squash, fuji apple, figs, rainbow cauliflower and hazelnut, while also offering elevated versions of year-round staples.

“The new menu rollout was one of the largest we have seen since the brand began. The idea was to capture the most beautiful winter vegetables and present them in ways that are memorable for our guests,” said Executive Chef Austin Brown.

Here are five new dishes that we felt held their own against any of the best Italian dishes in the city.

SMU Library Exhibit Features 200 Years of Tasty History Through Cookbooks

Just in time for Thanksgiving, a new cookbook exhibit at SMU’s DeGolyer Library is taking a look at history through a culinary lens. From a 276-page handwritten volume of recipes dating to 1816, to the first cookbook published in Texas, to a selection of ethnic cookbooks, there is a recipe for every taste.

The exhibit, “The Joy of Cooking – Two Centuries of Cookbooks at the DeGolyer Library,” will run through Dec. 22, featuring 206 books from DeGolyer’s 6,000-cookbook collection, acquired during the research library’s decades of collecting items related to Western Americana, transportation, women’s history and business history.

“Cookbooks are much more than compilations of recipes,” says Christina Jensen, curator of the exhibit and head of public services at the library. “They offer a timeline of economic, technology, family and social history.”
