Craft and Growler Opens Today

by Steven Doyle

Dallas seems to be a few years behind in the beer scene, and certainly that holds true when it comes to Growlers. Growlers are those large brown bottles used to store fresh poured beer that usually have a refrigeration life of just less than a week. The TABC mandates that bars are not allowed to pour growlers for roadie purposes, but they give special dispensation to pubs which hold a single beer and wine permit. Whole Foods has been a leader in the Dallas market for growlers, and today there is a special bar opening that focuses on the growler

The new Craft and Growler is owned by husband and wife attorneys Kevin Afghani and Catherine Kinslow who also operate a patent firm just to the rear of the Craft and Growler building located at 1601 Parry which is just in view of where Big Tex should be standing at Fair Park. The couple are soft opening Craft and Growler today at 3pm and close at 9. The shortened hours are just for this week and will expand starting after Thanksgiving.

Bowery Has A New And Improved Menu

by Steven Doyle

There seems to be no stopping this hot dog movement in Dallas and we have our favorites, but this list is expanding to include some different takes on what can be an extremely pedestrian food. Soon there will be a large handful of hot doggeries scattered across the Metroplex, and the chef-driven dog is a true stand out.

When Bowery first opened on McKinney Avenue it had its share of difficulties, but many of these issues have been met with decisive action and Bowery is back on course. Today there is a new menu which leaves the better selling dogs intact and the addition of a few new items, including a pretty solid burger.   Continue reading

Gastro Bomber Food Truck Invades The City

by Steven Doyle

An interesting new food truck has rolled onto the scene. Make welcome Gastro Bomber which features English-style pub. The truck is owned and operated by former active duty Marine Robert Robbins and his brother-in-law Chef KTJ, or KT for short.

We spotted the tuck rolling the North Dallas area and anchored on Forest Lane at the first Tuesday truck rally in the Sprouts Parking lot near the Marsh Lane intersection.          Continue reading

The Cheap Bastard Put Up A Good Meat Fight

by Robyn Folmar            photos by Nicholas McWhirter

Peoples of the world…! Hear me when I tell you that Meat Fight was one giant pile of awesome. The music was loud, the chefs cut loose and the attendees knew they were lucky as hell to be there. Tickets sold out in about an hour when they went on sale a few months ago and I’m not ashamed to admit that I sat at my computer like a dipstick refreshing the page until I got my tickets.

The Sons of Hermann Hall was the perfect venue for such a ridiculously fun celebration of all things animal meat. Local celeb-o-chefs including Tiffany Derry (recently stranded in NYC for a few days due to Hurricane Sandy), Brian Luscher, Matt McCallister, Jeff Bekavac, Jack Perkins and Omar Flores competed to win some super sophisticated gold pig and beer can trophies and Burger King crowns.            Continue reading

La Maison Cointreau And A Chat With Brand Ambassador Kyle Ford

by Steven Doyle

Thought to be the first recipe book about cocktails, the bartender’s guide “How To Mix Drinks or A Bon Vivant’s Companion” was published in 1862, written by Jerry Thomas and read by any bartender worth his flip, fizz or julep. An original copy of this book and dozens of others acquired by Cointreau was on display last night during their French-inspired cocktail party in Dallas.

The setting was the beautiful and historic Aldredge House located on Swiss Avenue. There, guests enjoyed Cointreau cocktails prepared by brand mixer Kyle Ford and later entertainment provided by Lady Rizo who is ringer for a young Rosemary Clooney.      Continue reading
