Patrick Henry Would’ve Loved Liberty Burger

by Steven Doyle   photos by Robert Bostick

When your paterfamilias is the legendary Gene Street who brought us such restaurants as Black Eyed Pea, Good Eats and Lucky’s, you will be forever put on notice should you ever attempt to succeed in the same industry. As the rumors turned into reality the young and insightful Mariel Street succeeded as she and her siblings opened what we are sure is just the first Liberty Burger.

Far from fast food, the burger-only restaurant is splashy and delectable. When ordering your Liberty Burger it is important to realize that all the ingredients are of the fresh-n-local variety, as is the beautifully baked bun from Empire Baking Company which is the tie that binds.            Continue reading

Holiday Vignettes: Chef Richard Chamberlain

by Steven Doyle                 photo by Robert Bostick

For the next few days we will be running short holiday vignettes that include some of our favorite food people, not all necessarily chefs. Yesterday we sent out a list of questions with a holiday bent, some silly, some more serious, and asked the group to pick just a few to answer. The answers so far have been fun, and we are happy to share these with you.   Continue reading

by Steven Doyle   photos by Robert Bostick

This past weekend Deep Ellum Brewing Company  officially opened their doors to the public by hosting a party on Saturday with live music and plenty of beer on hand to sooth the thirsty crowd. For the price of $10 about 300 beer fans showed up to sample a few of the beers Brew Master Drew Huerter had planned including the holiday beer, Festivus, which is a dark IPA with a very smooth finish.

Other beers sampled included the Farmhouse Wit and the popular Double Stout that is on hand at many pubs around town including the Anvil Pub, Common Table and in Plano, Holy Grail. The Farmhouse Wit was the first keg to officially float.       Continue reading

Home-Made Tamales for Christmas

by Steven Doyle    photos by Robert Bostick

In the past weeks leading up to Christmas we have been visiting various tamale makers in the Dallas area including La Popular and Abraham Salum at Komali where we got a primer in the art of tamales. This week we visited a very special woman who lives in the Oak Cliff area very near her son, co-owner of Coevál Studio and the new restaurant Campo Modern Country Bistro, John Paul Valverde.

We had asked John Paul if he had any leads on a good tamale maker and he sat back for a moment then smiled, “my mother makes the best tamales.”      Continue reading

Meet Chef Michael Ehlert

by Steven Doyle    photos by Robert Bostick

This week we have been examining the newly open Chesterfield. One of the unique gems that is part of the new lounge is chef Michael Ehlert. Ehlert is a recent transplant by way of his girlfriend who somms at Bailey’s Prime Plus. We sat down with Ehlert to find out more of his background and the plans he has for the very tiny Chesterfield kitchen.

Take a leap for the full Q&A and find out about his Top Chef connection, his crappy apartment in Long Island and a detailed look at the new menu he has cooking up at Chesterfield.     Continue reading

First Look: The Chesterfield

by Steven Doyle      photos by Robert Bostick

The Chesterfield opened their doors yesterday for lunch and we sent in ace photographer, Robert Bostick for a look-see. As we mentioned before, the room is small with just space enough for about 40 seats. The ceiling is probably taller than it is wide, but behind the bar there is plenty of room for some of the city’s most amazing cocktails produced by “Lucky” Eddie Campbell.   Continue reading

Eat the Uber Burger, Make it a Double

by Steven Doyle   photos by Robert Bostick

In the short few months Uncle Uber’s Sammich Shop has been open the Deep Ellum restaurant has made quite a name for itself. They make a truly fine sandwich with pretty incredible ingredients. But in the past weeks we have been hearing tall tales about their burger and decided to launch a full-on investigation.

Uncle Uber is actually Bryan and Kathy Crelly, local restaurateurs that have run other successful operations such as Fat Ted’s, Pueblo Arriba, Rockwell’s Neighborhood Grill and Uptown Bar and Grill. These are no amateurs in the industry.   Continue reading
