Seryn: More Than A Band of Foxes

by Dr. Spin

I put This Is Where We Are on my list early this year after countless ringing endorsements from many people whose musical opinions I respect, but I just never quite got around to ordering it. It’s not that I didn’t try – I looked into Seryn on a few occasions, and there was nothing about them that I didn’t like, but, despite having some common ground with the Fleet Foxes (whose album Helplessness Blueswas my top album of 2011), they didn’t quite hook me into taking the plunge.

Still, advocates of the band were unrelenting. Finally, one devoted fan, who is an ex-student and fellow blogger, was insistent enough to send me a copy of This Is Where We Are through the mail. You can’t get much more fervent backing than that feel the fervor over at El Pharmacio…

Q&A With Clint Cooper From Village Baking Company

by Steven Doyle

I had a chance to stop in to see Clint Cooper at the new Village Baking Company storefront and was fascinated by his excellent selection of breads and offerings. The very tiny shop is packed ear-to-ear with unusual breads that you might not normally find in the Dallas area. They are only open a few days a week, so if you decide to go, do so early as the shelves are wiped clean rather quickly.

The afternoon I dropped by, which was a Saturday, a woman popped in and demanded a bag of croissant. They had just sold the last croissant and she was none too happy, in fact I believe she said just that. The production of croissant, and other breads are increased each week to meet the demand, but the little shop that has been selling mostly retail and farmers markets is being hit with an ever increasing demand. And for good reason.  Continue reading

A Guide To Dallas Mole Sauce

by Steven Doyle

Today we have our taste buds set for mole. Mole is that earthy, slightly sweet deep brown sauce from Mexico that enriches any dish that it is served with. There are several decent examples of mole in Dallas, and we set out to sample a few plates.

Mole originated in Mexico, but that is about all some will agree on. The exact origin was perhaps Puebla, Oaxaca, but other states are known for their delicious moles with chile peppers as the common ingredient. The classic moles of central Mexico and Oaxaca, such as mole poblano and mole negro typically include ancho, pasilla and chipotle peppers.     Continue reading

Mextopia Now Serving Breakfast

by Steven Doyle

Ricardo Avila is now in the breakfast business at his cool Mexican restaurant on lower Greenville Avenue, Mextopia. Starting at 6:30am each day you can enjoy his version og breakfast tacos such as potato and egg or add chorizo. Avila will also feature his delicious cheese grits and churros with chocolate sauce.

This all comes from the guy that offers free kicked up bacon at his Wednesday bacon happy hour, so we are sure he will have some of that going on.

Besieged by Details

by Dr. Spin

Although I like to keep things positive on the blog, I have to admit that October has been a particularly trying month. In many facets of my life, I have a lot of people that rely heavily on me, and usually, I don’t mind being the person that plays an active role in holding things together. There are stressful and seemingly endless details with the house that need ironing out, though, and with the move coming up next month, it’s probably going to get worse before it gets better. Along with that, it feels like my work responsibilities have taken more energy than usual. With all of these stressors, being “the rock” seems a little overwhelming, and I’m a little ashamed of feeling that way….retro and timely at the pharmacy

Ruthies Rolling Cafe Announces A New Truck (Think Crepes)

by Jennifer Thomas

Ruthie’s Rolling Cafes are a trio of food trucks that have set a new standard in roving delicacies.  The first food truck, called Ruthie’s Rolling Cafe, introduced a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich that took Dallas by storm. Offering melt in your mouth grilled cheese sandwiches to the DFW area, word spread like wildfire and Ruthie’s achieved a cult following overnight.

“We use our grandmother’s nostalgic cheesy dreamy recipes and prepare them with love in our “kitchen on wheels”, the result is Ruthie’s Rolling Café, our best idea ever,” said owner Ashlee Hunt Kleinert.     Continue reading

Your Personal Car Service Uber: Win A $50 Credit

by Steven Doyle

We are super excited to announce that Uber, the uber cool car service, has made its way to Dallas. Although Uber has been servicing the area for a short while, they are up running in full force offering their services for all sorts of situations. Rally a car for a one way trip to a party, or request round trip to the latest gala.

I have been witnessing the service in town as bars close, and the service is impeccable. To use the service merely load the app and divulge your method of payment. Using the app on your smart phone you call up a car at various levels from a simple car, a black town car or an SUV. Each car has a limitation as far as passengers, but the cost is fixed including the gratuity.       Continue reading

First Look: British Beverage Company (Food Photos)

by Steven Doyle

In the former digs where Hully and Mo’s resided in the Dallas Uptown area, The British Beverage Company is nearly open and like most restaurants, it is slightly late to its own party.  Look for a very soft opening tomorrow evening, Thursday, November 1, 2012 with the official opening November 5.

We had the very first official look into the pub and was excited to see so much work went into the finish out, and that it didn’t look like a cheesy British Invasion. There are plenty of muted nods to the mother country, but they are well placed and not over-the-top.  Continue reading
