Chef Uno Invites You To Join Her In Mexico For A Culinary Vacation

unoby Steven Doyle

We have been following Uno Immanivong since we met her last Fall when she was competing in the Anthony Bourdain television program The Taste. We since learned she would be opening her restaurant Chino Chinatown in Trinity Groves   most likely in October. Uno has this vibrant and warm personality that is at once charming and inviting.

This summer her fans will have a chance to get to know her much better as she leads an excursion to the Mayan Riveria where they will enjoy hands on cooking classes, a greenhouse tour, cocktail and cooking demos, a pop-up beach dinner and much more.      Continue reading

Give Dad The Gift Of Beef This Father’s Day

fiorentinaby Steven Doyle

Jimmy’s Food Store owner Paul DiCarlo wants beef for Father’s day. Not just any beef, but instead he wants to be flown to Tuscany for a Bistecca Fiorentina made by Dario Cecchini, ‘the Butcher of Panzano’. The DiCarlo sons won’t be flying their father to Tuscany this Sunday, but we have it on good authority that the boys will be grilling that very slab of beef here in Dallas for their dad.

A real Bistecca Fiorentina comes from an ancient Tuscan breed, the Chianina cow. It is one of the world’s largest breeds; tall and alabaster in color. The cow is generally used as a beast of burden due to its strength and stature, but the meat is prized for its succulent flavor.   Continue reading

Summer Indian Chaat Festival at Samar Deserves a Longer Run

samar1

Sadly, Samar by Stephan Pyles will close in a couple of weeks for three months of scheduled renovations to the office building that it occupies. Not only will this mean that we don’t get the regular menu, it will also mean that they won’t get a chance to reprise hits from their one night Summer Chaat Festival last night (where I was an invited guest). Chaat is Indian street food and examples are rare here, being confined mainly to the small cadre of authentic Indian restaurants dotted around Irving and Plano.     Continue reading

Exclusive: Trinity Groves Fork Fight Battle

trinity grovesby Steven Doyle

More news from the folks at Trinity Groves, and this time there is competition in the air. Look for an NCAA bracket-style throw-down between all the restaurants starting July 11 (tentative), and continue each week until the last restaurant standing will face off Sharon Van Meter, owner and chef at 3015. The competition is called the Fork Fight Battle.

The events are still being finalized, but the group should meet each Thursday with a head-to-head competition that includes cocktails, and a wine paired four course meal from each restaurant.  Continue reading

SPCA Pets of the Week

Ester114367MS

Meet Ester, a spunky 14-years-young, 27-pound Terrier mix who is looking for a family to call her own.  Ester was surrendered to the SCPA of Texas on April 26 because, sadly, her previous owners moved to a place that does not allow pets.  While her life has taken quite a turn, she is excited to start this new adventure with YOU.  She is a running superstar and loves to jump and prance about the dog park.  A perfect day for her includes taking a brisk walk around the neighborhood, chasing tennis balls, and snuggling up for a delightful nap in your lap.

While she is a fantastic family pet and has previously lived with children, she would prefer to be in a home without other dogs or cats.  That way, she can be properly doted upon like the little princess that she is!  In addition to being a feisty love-bug, she is also quite talented.  Ester is the perfect lady on the leash, knows how to sit on command, and, drum roll, please… she is housetrained!  Continue reading
