Tei Tei Robata Bar Still The Best

Our roving contributing photographer, Joey Stewart has been busier than ever hitting up the area’s finest sushi digs in Dallas. Today we visit Tei Tei Robata Bar on Henderson which is definitely one of our favorites.

Tei Tei was opened in 1998 by Teiichi Sakurai who is also the owner of Tei-An. Both are highly praised by local critics as Teiichi is the best at his craft. Teeich sold Tei Tei more recently to his chef, Katsutoshi Sakamoto, but you can spot the former owner sitting at the robata bar on any given night. Continue reading →

Eat Me: Roasted Baby Artichokes At Gemma

Gemma opened up just one year ago the day after Christmas and has fast become one of my favorite restaurants in the Dallas area. The clean, well rounded menu is always seasonal, always interesting, with some bold flavors done simply delicious.

One of my happy go-to appetizers is this roasted baby artichoke dish that is served with wild arugula, poached farm egg, and a Provençal vinaigrette. I have made a quick meal of this dish with a few oysters paired up with one of the by-the-glass sparkling wines for a perfect repast. Continue reading →

We Found The Best Taco In Dallas

Tacos still lead the way as the quintessential Dallas food, standing proudly next to smoked brisket and the ever popular burger. We have waved through the many varieties in the area, including those filled with smoky and crispy bugs and larvae, but the best tacos seem to come off the trompo. The tacos al pastor de trompo is the conical-shaped meat stack that is most likely constructed in the back room of the restaurant by layering thin slices of marinated pork.

The meat used to contruct the trompo is often leg meat or pork butt, marinated in achiote, chili peppers, garlic, onion and pineapple juice for several days. The trompo is made with layers of the seasoned pork on a large vertical skewer which looks much like a child’s spinning top (thus the name trompo) and placed on a vertical skewer as p char the outer layers of the meat very much like a Greek gyro. The trompo more than likely has Lebanese roots, as there is a large population of Lebanese-Hispanics in Mexico. The trompo is thought to have actual ties to another food, the shawarma. Gemma Opens December 26

Here is the latest restaurant to open in the Henderson area. This space was formerly Fish City Grill and is a few doors down from Veritas. The press release says it all. Photos courtesy of Kevin Marple.

Dallas’ newest restaurant created by husband and wife duo, Allison Yoder and Stephen Rogers will open December 26th 2013 for dinner. Located at 2323 Henderson Avenue, Gemma promises to offer a fresh and modern American seasonal menu with ethnic influences in a welcoming and comfortable setting.

Allison Yoder will act as general manager, while her chef husband Stephen Rogers will run the kitchen. Rogers says his food is “simple, uncomplicated, rustic but refined”. He manipulates recipes from all different regions and countries around the globe to bring a simple yet boldly flavorful experience. Taking inspiration from Asian, Italian, Mediterranean, French cultures and more, Rogers says, “ I am not trying to reinvent the wheel. I want to showcase the ingredients of my recipes and deliver a product that our guests will crave.” Rogers purchases his proteins and veggies from small American farmers and producers and works a great deal with vegetables as an accompaniment. Sissy’s Hosts “Shake For Second Base” Cocktail Extravaganza

Some of Dallas’ finest lady bartenders will be mixing drinks at Shake for Second Base on Sunday January 13th to raise money for breast cancer research. Sissy’s Southern Kitchen & Bar, at 2929 N Henderson, Dallas will host the event from 6pm-10pm so come early for drinks and bites. The showcase of strong females in the Service Industry not only places women at the forefront of the burgeoning cocktail culture in Dallas but also, raises money for an issue that will affect one out of eight American women in their lifetime according to the American Cancer Society. All Day Happy Hour At Gin Mill

The Gin Mill on Henderson is attracting a new top of the week crowd with their all day Monday and Tuesday specials that includes an all-day happy hour with discounted drinks on into the evening and half price signature or “build your own” flatbread pizzas and appetizers including the popular Mad Mussels, Vodka Shrimp, Jimmy’s Meatballs and Chinese Steamed Buns until kitchen close at 11:00pm.

The bar hosts a good amount of local brews such as Franconia, Deep Ellum, Peticolas and Lakewood on tap, serving 80 beers in all.

Vspot Cafe Premiers New Raw Bar And Plots Additional Locations

Recently the owner of Bliss Raw Café & Elixer Bar sold off the assets to the restaurant along with furnishings and recipes to Paula Sepulvado. The previous owner, Dee Pisarro still owns Vspot Cafe and retained all the rights to her recipes at Bliss and plans to add those items to her menu at the Henderson location starting tomorrow, July 20, 2012.

In addition to the East Dallas location of Vspot, Pisarro has slated additional locations of the vegan friendly restaurant in Fort Worth and Houston and has signed a letter of intent in Aspen, Colorado. Continue reading →

Small Plates At Snack

Sometimes when you are out dining you simply want a snack. Small plates is actually my favorite way to dine, you get so many different flavors packed into one meal. If variety is the spice of life then Snack Global Kitchen and Bar is a whole lot of living.

As we had mentioned in our first look at Snack, it is a global kitchen, which basically means the kitchen staff can create anything they wish and be as imaginative as possible. This is genius.

We stopped into Snack late Sunday evening just before closing and the staff was winding down from a busy day. Sous chef Cody Sharp was at the helm and we are always pleased to see this firecracker of a chef. After graduating from Cordon Bleu Sharp took his first line position at Rockwall’s Restaurant Ava and simultaneously started working part time for Katherine Clapner at Dude, Sweet Chocolate in Bishop Arts.
