First Look: Sugarbacon Proper Kitchen

DSC08376by Steven Doyle

Restaurant veteran Johnny Carros (most recently general manager of Kent Rathbun’s Jasper’s restaurant) and chef Jon Thompson (most recently executive chef for Samar and Stampede 66 by Stephan Pyles) have partnered to create Sugarbacon Proper Kitchen. Located at 216 W. Virginia Street in McKinney’s historic downtown, this casual yet sophisticated restaurant serves lunch and dinner with weekend brunch service following later this summer.

Carros and Thompson explain the concept as upscale casual with fresh, flavorful, uncomplicated food. “The philosophy behind our menu is that simple ingredients, when sourced well, can be elevated by an experienced chef to an unbelievable level of flavor. We are staying away from complex sauces and layers and instead allowing the food itself to shine. The smoked Berkshire pork chop with green chile hominy casserole is a soon-to-be-favorite that signifies this New American menu with Texas undertones,” says Thompson who has worked as a chef in the kitchens of Stephan Pyles and Bradley Ogden.   Continue reading

A Trip To Square Burger In McKinney

by Steven Doyle

What do you do with a chef who graduated from the California Culinary Academy, worked at Spago, Abacus, Five Sixty and numerous other spots of similar caliber? Some might say have the chef move to McKinney and open a café that sells  great burgers and beer. That is the case with chef Craig Brundege who operates Square Burger in McKinney.

Square Burger has been running strong for over four years offering their power-house line up of great burgers and daily specials that will often include fresh fish and pastas. But what drives us 30 miles up I75 to downtown McKinney from the inner-workings of Dallas are those haunting burgers.   Continue reading

PS App Ahi Tacos_lowby Steven Doyle

Class is almost in session at the West Village’s newest gastropub, Public School 214, which will be opening doors to the public on Thursday, January 29th at 11 AM. In additional this opening news, they have announced Public School 972, which is headed to the Addison area in fall 2015.  This past weekend we had a chance to sample much of the fare at PS 214 at a pre-opening dining event hich gave us some perspective in what you have waiting for you when you come in to try the new restaurant, and you will want to come in for a tasting.

The menu at Public School exploits only the hottest trends in food and booze. So you can be sure to find a crazy good version of  chicken and waffles, with their tower high plateful secured by several  waffles made in house using a cornbread batter, with bits of corn, cheese and green chiles. This was served with a side of red-eye gravy for an extra kick.   Continue reading

McKinney’s Patina Green To Offer Dinner Options

lyford1

Patina Green Home and Market, located on the historic McKinney downtown square was named best sandwich in Texas according to Food  Network Magazine. Now, after nearly 5 years in the lunch business,  the owners are introducing a dinner menu on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings each week, and it will most likely be an award winner as well.

Chef Robert and Kaci Lyford opened Patina Green in June 2010 when their family was in need of some healing. Kaci’s mother’s husband had just lost his battle with cancer and their world was shaken. Their eyes began to open to see the unfortunate reality of the American food system, and began their search for locally grown real food. Besides weekly farmer’s markets, the quest was difficult, and so their focus for Patina Green became clear.  Continue reading
