Serious Bowls Of Soup To Keep You Warm Tonight

fearings
by Steven Doyle

The weather forecast calls for the possibility of freezing rain in North Texas. Time to hunker down to a fine bowl of soup, either at home, or out and about for the brave. Either way, we’ve got you covered.

Tortilla Soup simply screams Dallas, and the king of the Tortilla Soup is none other than Dean Fearing who picked up the task while serving as Mess Sergeant at The Mansion on Turtle Creek.  We have witnessed the making of this soup, and let’s just say it is far easier to mosey into the Ritz-Carlton than actually produce the soup yourself. However, if you wish to attempt the recipe, we list it at the bottom of this article.

Eat Me: Cơm Gà Xối Mỡ at Pho Pasteur

cornishby Steven Doyle

There are so many wonderful dishes to be found at the Richardson pho staple restaurant, Pho Pasteur. You will certainly enjoy the bun mang vit, duck soup to you and me, or the grilled pork chop adorned with a fried egg. But today we wish to order the Cơm Gà Xối Mỡ, or simply a Cornish hen and rice.

The tiny hen is plump with juicy meat, and a deliciously crisped outer layer that quickly relents with each bite. This dish pairs perfectly with the fresh spring rolls.   Continue reading

Eat Me: The Fried Rice at DaLat

FullSizeRender11by Steven Doyle

In an uncertain world there are few things we might find comforting. The snuggles of a cute puppy, a breezy gust of cool Winter air, and certainly the steaming platter of fried rice from DaLat. The dish comes with Chinese pork sausage and shrimp. You may add a fried egg as a topper (highly suggested) and sub out the shrimp for tofu or chicken. How ever you concoct your fried rice, it will arrive at your table steaming with a slight crispness that will send you reeling.

The fried rice is a great dish to share, which opens options and further choices. Of course the pho is delicious, especially late night after a few choice cocktails. But as of late the choice has been Soup 4 The Soul which is a bowl of broth with rice instead of the requisite noodles, meatballs, pico de gallo, and a choice of chicken, beef or tofu. This is a soothing and most comforting bowl that is fantastic year round.

Eat Me: DaLat’s Chili

dalatby Steven Doyle

Plenty can be written about Khanh Nguyen at DaLat. He is definitely the king of the late night menu, serving pho and plenty of other interesting Vietnamese items on into the night.  Arrive at 1:59 and you will be welcome to order, whereas any other establishment would be sweeping and shaking you off to find bad waffles for your 2am fix. Many of the late night patrons are waiters, bartenders and chefs. Others arrive directly from the bars that surround the neighborhood. All are welcomed with a steaming bowl of pho, or one of the many other items that will definitely sooth your soul.

And damn those delicious little DaLat shooters which are Vietnamese meatballs seared and sunk into a spicy broth of sake, coconut and cream. Toss your head back for a moment of bliss.    Continue reading
