Pizza Gratis, Por Favor

by Steven Doyle

The geniuses behind Pizza Patron, a Dallas based chain with locations strategically placed in predominately Hispanic neighborhoods, are back in the news again. Just a few short years ago the 20-year old restaurant chain made headlines when they began accepting pesos as currency for their products. Pizza Patron’s slogan has always been Más Pizza. Menos Dinero.   Continue reading →

Bailey’s New Menu Really Works

by Steven Doyle       photos by Rod  Orta

Just last week we shared some information on how the new menu was being worked at Bailey’s Prime Plus and today we have more insight, plus news on several of the locations around DFW.

As avid readers might be aware, the Nosh team of Avner Samuels and Jon Stevens have been working with the Bailey’s group to fine tune the menu. In the past weeks they have actually revamped the offerings to the point that business has improved legions over what had been expected in the past. Last evening we stopped in for a tasting as invited guests of the management. What we found was simply nothing short of miraculous.         Continue reading →

Let’s Go Falafeling!

by Ellen Ritscher Sackett

Can you Spanakopita? Dare to Dolma? Think Greek when you dine at Yummy’s Restaurant in Denton, Texas.

Don’t judge Yummy’s by its postage-stamp size or its location in a tiny strip-mall off a main commercial drag. This hole-in-the-wall has been a local favorite for traditional Mediterranean cuisine since 1986.

I arrive for a late lunch and most of the tables are full. I chose a spot near the counter where there’s a short line of customers waiting to pay for their meals. Mohammad Apache, the owner who’s busy in the kitchen, converses in Lebanese to the young woman at the register. The lime green booths are long gone, replaced with stackable chairs and tables that can seat 36 when the place is packed. The addition of a mirrored wall makes this cubbyhole look bigger than it is, and the posters of Greece and Lebanon make me hungry for travel in addition to food.         Continue reading →

Joe Chow Running For US Congress

by Steven Doyle

Just weeks ago we reported on one Dallas restaurateur taking to the campaign trail in a bid for US Senate. We are happy to report that John Jay Meyer has been slugging away as he makes his way to Washington.  With this news comes yet another Dallas restaurant mogul wanting a place in political history, Joe Chow.  Chow is running for US Congress in District 6. Chow has seven children with two that served in Iraq.

We saw Chow this weekend as he glad handed during the Taste Addison festival and asked him a few questions.          Continue reading →

First Look: Snack

by Steven Doyle

We had the first look at Snack, the new restaurant brought to you by the team of  Avner Samuel and Jon Stevens who have been knocking it out of the park with Nosh.  Snack is located on Henderson in the vacated Horne and Dekker space and has undergone a tremendous transformation.

Stevens has been working on the menu for Snack and making preparations for the opening at the same time he was revamping the Bailey’s kitchen. Stevens admitted all the work has taken a toll on him but he is happy that Snack will be opening its doors at 4pm tomorrow (May 22, 2012) serving cocktails with the kitchen swinging open at 5pm.  Continue reading →

Monica’s and ME Lounge Opening Soon

by Jerry Stewart

Monica’s Aca y Alla will go through a facelift within the next couple of months.  Her current partners have decided to remain at 2914 Main Street in Deep Ellum and will reopen as a (yet-to-be-named) new Mexican restaurant. Monica will be consulting on this venture but not actively involved. Her main focus will now turn to her new venture: Monica’s and ME Lounge.

Located at the ilume  at 4123 Cedar Springs Road in Dallas, Monica’s and ME Lounge is scheduled to open July 12, 2012.  Yes, I know her new venture was supposed to be Tajin, but the decision to close Monica’s Aca y Alla caused a change in plans.       Continue reading →
