Pop Up BBQ? Yes, Please

porkby Steven Doyle

Pop Up restaurants are fun. Tasting cuisine that is not on any menu in town, and inspired for that one evening and fed to a small gathering is definitely my idea of entertainment. There are a small handful of chefs that make the Pop Up their livelihood. Chef DAT comes to mind, as does Frank, the underground private dinner party experience by MasterChef Season 2 finalists Jennie Kelley & Ben Starr. I also enjoy the food styling’s of Chef Nicole. We have discussed all these fun Pop Ups on craveDFW at length.

Now coming your way on Thursday, June 6, 2013 you will have a chance at tasting the first BBQ Pop Up at Garden Café in East Dallas. This is from Robert Lanktree who works for Julian Barsotti at Carbone’s and as sous for Chef DAT. Continue reading →

Tomorrow afternoon at Flag Pole Hill, Miracle Players Foundation will be hosting its third annual Peace, Hope, & Butterflies family fun and music festival. New Research: How Social Media Affects Our Food Habits

new-research-01by Lori Barber

If you’re in the business of selling food to consumers you’ve noticed how much has changed since social networking became a part of our daily lives… young girls no longer learn to cook from their mothers, meal planning happens on the fly, and it’s now socially acceptable to take pictures of your food.

June Jo Lee, Vice-President, Strategic Insights, Hartman Group presented her findings from ethnographic analysis of everyday life in relation to food at United Fresh 2013 San Diego. For those of you who are not familiar with the term “ethnographic analysis”, it’s the qualitative research used to explore a cultural phenomena. As a fellow marketer, a food and wine lover, celebrity chef groupie, and proud owner of nearly every hand-held mobile device ever made, I was not all surprised to learn that Hartman Group’s research validated what I’ve suspected all along: consumers are now looking to bloggers and their social media communities for online opinions to expand their culinary horizons and make food purchase decisions.   Continue reading →

Who Shall Go Into Kitchen LTO First

Chef Matt Redick with his Fried Shrimp with Brown Gravy Beurre Blanc and Cheddar Biscuitby Andrew Chalk

That was the question facing Dallas diners last night at a sell out event at Trinity Groves. Kitchen LTO is a (oxymoron ahead) “permanent  pop-up restaurant”. The site, the wine and beer list, and the staff will all be permanent (except that the staff will age at the same rate as they would anywhere else…).  The chef and the restaurant design will change every four months. The LTO in the name stands for “Limited Time Offer” (my guess, “long-term operation”, turned out to be way off). This macabre, but rather brilliant idea is the brainchild of Casie Caldwell, founder and owner of Greenz, the salad chain where they teach spelling.   Continue reading →

Chef Andre Natera, photo by Danny Fulgencio - dannyfulgencio.comby Steven Doyle

I know I am not the only one impressed with the marvelous job Andre Natera is doing over at Marquee Grill in Highland Park Village. His deft hand plays merriment on our palate, and it seems he never grows weary of playfulness in his kitchen.

We will settle for our nunchaku and bow hunting skills all the while as we lust after the following weekend specials he sent our way in email today. Check out the photos below and enjoy licking your monitor, or just make reservations.   Continue reading →
