Kookie Haven is Cookie Heaven

image3 (15).jpegby Steven Doyle

When sisters Nita Briggs, Kim Haynes and Darla McCuen sat down to decide what business they would open it became vastly clear they needed to resurrect their mother’s recipes and open the bakery that it now at 337 West Jefferson in Dallas. Kookie Haven is often confused for just a cookie shop because of the name, but that was actually their mother’s name, and although she is in heaven now it is a haven for those that love great pastries.

We sat down with sister Nita today because we needed to find out why people were flocking to this shop located next to Cultivar and Small Brew Pub.  Continue reading

Meet Chef Annie West

DSC09899by Steven Doyle

Last evening Chef DAT, owner of Twenty-Seven, opened his doors to a unique chef in her own right right, Annie West. The event was a small gathering which was perfect for the Deep Ellum location. The event was as unique as DAT’s restaurant, which is typically closed on a Sunday evening. Chef West had this brilliant plan to offer a special tasting of cupcakes, or cuppies as she calls them, with beer.

Now to look at West you would not think she even drank beer, but she does enjoy a nice brew on occasion, and last night she shared some of her local favorites along with some delicious hand-made treats. The pastries were exquisite, and it shows her extreme attention to detail. Notice in our photos the lattice work, all done by hand.   Continue reading

Meet The Latest Dallas BBQ Food Truck, Not Just Q

DSC01506by Steven Doyle

I sat down recently with Eric Hansen and Robert Carter who together just started a new food truck business called Not Just Q. Curious name, but certainly we could assume they are doing BBQ and plenty more. These are both interesting fellows, with different backgrounds and personalities that seem to make it work.

Eric Hansen is classically trained at Cordon Bleu and hails from the Kansas City area. Eric has worked at restaurants and been in the business since he was 11 years old.  Being from Kansas City that means pork shoulders, ribs and plenty of sauce to soak up the meat. Robert Carter has a background in psychology and worked with children. It was after many sleepless nights that he abandoned his life’s work for the restaurant industry. He lists a series of high profile BBQ legends including Big Al’s, Eddie Deen and most recently Mike Anderson.    Continue reading
