Every so often I see a burger that looks and taste so delicious it deserves a day unto itself. Today we have such a burger that can only be found at the Swiss Pastry Shop in Fort Worth. Perhaps many of you think of Swiss Pastry as the ultimate place to purchase a Black Forest Cake, and you are correct. But owner Hans Muller is a meaty kind of guy, and cranks out a sublime Philly as well. And if you follow his daily antics on Facebook, and you should, you will see him conjur up a burger daily that will have you dropping your TPS reports at the office and rushing in for a beefy repast. A Taste of the Just Released Deep Ellum Four Swords Cab Barrel Aged at the New Taproom
We checked in at the fairly new Deep Ellum Taproom located inside the brewery of the same name, and was pleasantly surprised to find what resembles a pretty cool looking pub found on the outskirts of Deep Ellum. You can often find beers that the brewery produces that might not be served elsewhere, such as the new Four Swords Cabernet Barrel Aged brew released today in bottles. If you go today when they open their doors, you might be able to find a few snifters left of this unique beer. Otherwise you will need to scout out a bottle or two at your favorite high-end beer retailer. The supply is horrendously limited at about 45 cases.
We chatted up Deep Ellum Brewery owner John Reardon for the low down on this special beer and he said it was the Four Swords quad that has been barrel aged in casks they purchased from Ben Calais over a year ago when Calais winery was still located in Deep Ellum, If you recall, Calais has since moved to their new vineyard in the hill country of Hye, Texas. 2015 San Antonio Cocktail Conference A Boozy Success
Last week for five days San Antonio rolled out their finest red carpet to host their fourth annual Cocktail Conference, one that was well attended by the best bartenders not only in Texas, but from across the country, and beyond. Like its bigger brother in New Orleans, the annual Tales of the Cocktail, there are plenty of cocktails consumed while attended he various events. Those events include both industry and public fetes, all festooned with a variety of spirits, brews and even wine – all with glamour and sometimes a hint of kitsch.
For some attendees it was a time to hone their craft, for others it was about the exchange of thought and trends in the industry. For the public, it was high moments of revelry and a chance to celebrate all things cocktail. All this which raised awareness and plenty of cash for Houston Street Charities, a non-profit set up by restaurateur Mark Bohanan, owner of the premium steakhouse in San Antonio, Bohanan’s Prime Steaks and Seafood. Pints & Quarts Set To Open Mid April
I reached out to Brooke Humphries (owner of Mudsmith, Barcadia, and It’ll Do) about her new burger resto, Pints & Quarts that will be located on the southwest corner of Ross and Greenville Avnue. This is a tiny building that formerly hosted a small tire shop.
If you drive by the corner you can see that construction has begun on the building, and Humphries is looking at mid April to open this burger stop that will have a “vintage gas station vibe”. Humphries said, “it will be as period correct as we can get it. You know I love that.” Look for solid fast casual burgers, flat top dogs with a good all-in price point below $10. Continue reading
