Green Grocer in Dallas Shuttering Jan 18th

greenby Steven Doyle

What should have been the ideal neighborhood and the perfect shop for fresh produce and deliciously prepared meal items that  are short of GMO’s and tall on organic and locally sourced goodness, Green Grocer announced that it will be closing its doors Monday, January 18th. The sad news will have an economic impact with upwards to fifty local suppliers, many are growers who depend on shops such as Green Grocer for their livelihood.

Owner Cassie Green, a transplant from Chicago where she had previously left corporate life to open a similar operation before finally moving to Dallas, opening up the boutique grocer in 2012.    Continue reading →

BITE by Chef Eddy a Terrific Surprise

Eddy Tby Steven Doyle

We recently checked out the new BITE, which was formerly Kin Kin, both owned by Thai chef Eddy Thretipthuangsin. BITE is located at 3211 Oak Lawn and offers what the chef calls a Global Panoply, with menu  options that are  influenced by Asian, European and American flavors. The menu is a bit innovative, but the execution is so much more.

We tasted a whole host of these flavors starting with this amazing Parmesan Soufflé made with Reggiano and a side of garlic cream sauce, and accented with a parmesan tuile. The soufflé takes twenty minutes, so you will want to order right away for a perfect appetizer that is perfectly sized for two. Another fun starter includes the Seared Diver Scallop that is adorned with applewood smoked bacon, tomato confit, an edamame puree and yuzu beurre-blanc.

The French influences stand out on this menu which is also evidenced by the Pan-Seared Hudson Valley Foie Gras served with toasted brioche, a pear compote and port wine reduction.    Continue reading →

dsc01375by Jennifer Thomas

Our favorite restaurant in Keller is by far FnG Eats, owned by chef Bob Stephenson. The menu is varied and caters well to the community, and is fun and imaginative. Take a visit and you will soon experience the same. Today we learned that chefs Carlos Arevalo & Bob Stephenson are hosting a wine dinner and “communal gathering” January 20th at 7pm. And may this be the first time I say or write 2016. Priced at a bargain rate of $55, you will want to be part of this event. Call 817.741.5200 to reserve.

Our editor wrote a first look on this restaurant when they opened in  2012, check that out here to learn more about the restaurant. When you are there you may ask Bob to do a poetry slam just for fun. He is quite good at this.

New Year’s Resolutions You Can Live (And Dine Out) With

Men-dietby Shane Allen, CSM, WMS, CSN

I hope I’m not the first to tell you, but it’s 2016. In the fitness world we call the first quarter of the year “weight loss season.” Losing weight or being more healthy is hands down the number one resolution each and every year.
The result?  Gyms are packed with people who haven’t seen a treadmill in the better part of eight months. Local juiceries like Roots Juices are struggling to keep up with demand as health conscious Texans try to jump start their dieting. Your friends keep ordering salad instead of the usual burger or sauce-drenched steak.

US News & World Report and countless other publications released this week their “best diets of 2016.” Even morning TV shows like Good Morning America had a segment this week on the top three diets.    Continue reading →
