Occupy North Pole at Santa Rampage

by Steven Doyle   photo by Christi Beard

One of our contributors and photographers Christi Beard was on the scene at this past weekend’s Santa Rampage, the combination pub crawl and Santa flash mob event that started at Lee Harvey’s and made its way slowly through out the day to Deep Ellum.

Time Magazine’s Person of the Year is the protestor, and Rampage had their share of them. SWAT Santa made sure the crowd of Occupy North Pole protesters didn’t get out of hand by using a preemptive candy cane scented pepper spray on them to maintain crowd control and presumably to hoard more cookies for himself.

Home-Made Tamales for Christmas

by Steven Doyle    photos by Robert Bostick

In the past weeks leading up to Christmas we have been visiting various tamale makers in the Dallas area including La Popular and Abraham Salum at Komali where we got a primer in the art of tamales. This week we visited a very special woman who lives in the Oak Cliff area very near her son, co-owner of Coevál Studio and the new restaurant Campo Modern Country Bistro, John Paul Valverde.

We had asked John Paul if he had any leads on a good tamale maker and he sat back for a moment then smiled, “my mother makes the best tamales.”      Continue reading

We Crave Princi Italia

By Steven Doyle

There have been a few new Italian restaurants hit Dallas in the past few months, and they have changed the culinary landscape for the better. One is the very recent Zio Cecio, which is run by restaurant veteran Francesco Farris which we took a look at some weeks back. Then we have the new addition to the Preston Royal intersection in the old Popolos digs with another restaurant veteran Patrick Colombo at the helm with  Princi Italia.

The space at Princi has been slivered a bit, and the Colombo 86’d the banquet room which was turned into an AT&T store. The large bar that was in the middle of Popolos was taken out leaving the wood oven in front of the kitchen. A new bar was placed by the front door giving the room a more open feel.     Continue reading

First Look: Oak

by Steven Doyle

All the beautiful pieces are in place. Oak has this pretty fantastic location on Oak Lawn in the Design District across from the Meddlesome Moth and was designed by Royce Ring and Alex Urrunaga of Plan B who did the recent Bolsa Mercado, the Candle Room, Whiskey Cake and Cedars Social. Add in the owners who are these amazing hospitality specialists, Tommy DeAlano and Richard Ellman. Then hire on chef Jason Maddy as your exec chef who was formerly at the Mansion. You would have a huge pot of success just waiting to happen. This is what the restaurant Oak is all about.

We had an opportunity to stop in Oak for a quick preview this past weekend and chatted with DeAlano, who enjoys nothing more than to speak about the new restaurant.   Continue reading

If you didn’t plan for a Santa suit this year, do not despair. You may still join the Santa Rampage tonight and we have their schedule. The rampage begins at Lee Harvey’s at 3pm and will move to the Art’s District at 7:30pm via DART rail and enjoy the various food trucks that will be awaiting them. The trucks include 3 Men and a Taco, Easyslider, Jack’s Chowhound and Cup Cakin. We are told this is where the reindeer high jinx will take place (think pillow fights and the like).     Continue reading

Meet Chef Michael Ehlert

by Steven Doyle    photos by Robert Bostick

This week we have been examining the newly open Chesterfield. One of the unique gems that is part of the new lounge is chef Michael Ehlert. Ehlert is a recent transplant by way of his girlfriend who somms at Bailey’s Prime Plus. We sat down with Ehlert to find out more of his background and the plans he has for the very tiny Chesterfield kitchen.

Take a leap for the full Q&A and find out about his Top Chef connection, his crappy apartment in Long Island and a detailed look at the new menu he has cooking up at Chesterfield.     Continue reading
