Attending the opening night of Lucia di Lammermoor was quite an experience. The Dallas Opera was gracious enough to show the live performance under the stars at no charge on a very large screen with pretty awesome fidelity. However if you were fortunate enough to have an actual seat for that evening you would have been rubbing elbows with gents in top hats and their sexy escorts donning incredible jewels and gowns.
For an opera night in Dallas the evening was a bit more snazzy than usual, whispered several Winspear employees as they escorted us to our seats. Typical nights are more relaxed, and the TDO seems to be going through a concerted effort to cater to all walks of life interested in great music. Continue reading

One of the high points of the weekend certainly was the Hotter Than Hell Margarita challenge in Bishop Arts featuring Sauza Tequila. Taking place at 6pm this past Sunday, the crowd quickly swelled to over 2,500 as ticket lines snaked down Seventh Street just off Bishop. Happy gatherers met with the promise of margaritas, and although the lines were a bit of a challenge, the crowd stayed quenched with the large variety of the tequila soaked cocktail flowed freely. Celebrating the storming of the Bastille in France 222 years ago yesterday causes us now to think of crepes, silly tunes played on an accordion, wispy thin mustaches and mussels. In the case of the celebration yesterday in Oak Cliff’s hipster Bishop Arts District thoughts fell on the latter with seven heavy-weight local chefs standing toque-to-toque in the third annual rocking mussel contest.
With music blaring through the streets, crowds gathered to challenge the heat, play games, drink wine and sample what the chefs brought to the table. Continue reading

Hot Texas summer nights usually create a lack of interest in food that is anywhere near warm and I certainly do not want to start up any of the appliances in my own kitchen. Salad? Blech….you all know my feelings on a life of salad. I know I’m not the only veggie that gets sick of salad. I’d probably just have forgone eating at all, except for the fact that my body would revolt and there are some really amazing summer food options in Dallas.
In order to kill two birds with one stone, I wandered down to Bishop Arts District for sushi and people watching (one of my favorite pastimes). I just love Zen Sushi. It is a great little spot for dining and watching….I especially love watching people press their noses up to the dark glass to glimpse inside instead of just opening the door. Continue reading
