Food Truck Rally and Beer Tasting

One of the most exciting developments in the restaurant world today is the emergence of the gourmet food truck. While Dallas has lagged behind other major cities around the country, it seems that the City Council has finally worked out the bugs in the system to accommodate this exciting trend. Franconia Beer Dinner At Whiskey Cake

Celebrate Tomatina at Samar

The last Wednesday of August in the Valencia town of Buñol in Spain they hold a festival each year that started in 1944 as a small rivalry discouraged by police, but since the 1950’s has been openly accepted. You may have seen photographs of Tomatina, the largest tomato fight in the world.

Each year the tomato fight swells to larger proportions as the local government began trucking in low quality tomatoes grown for the festival in the 1980’s, replacing the homegrown tomatoes gathered by the people of Buñol. Continue reading →

Chef Under Fire Results

The Milestone was hopping once again last night as a large group gathered to witness an Iron Chef-type challenge at the 2011 Chefs Under Fire Competition was underway. Gene and Julie Gates of the KVIL Gene & Julie Show hosted the night along with special guests Chef John Tesar and Sommelier Scott Barber of The Commissary who were on hand for a cooking and wine pairing demonstration.

Chef Kevin Martinez of Tokyo Cafe was named the DFW Regional Winner, and was closely followed by Chef Juan Rodriguez of Reata Restaurant as runner-up. Chef Martinez’s winning dish was a Seared Tilefish with Fresh Peach & Tomato Salsa on a Corn & Okra-Yuzu Succotash Topped with Crispy Shallots, using secret ingredient Golden Tilefish, provided by Seafood Supply Company, and all three secret ingredient produce items: Okra, Sweet Corn, & Peach. Benefit for Stone Family Raises over 10k

Last evening we attended the fundraiser for fallen firefighter, Lt. Shannon Stone at the Dallas Farmers Market. The event attracted over 125 people raising an estimated $10,000 for the family.

The event was the brainchild of Pecan Lodge owners Diane and Justin Fourton and Jill Grobowsky Bergus of Lockhart Smokehouse who were particularly moved by the death of Stone after he fell to his death at a Ranger game July 7, 2011. After hearing the terrible news they called on a few industry friends to create this special evening.

Granada Does Honky Tonk

It’s going to be a Honky Tonk Friday night at the Granada Theater and The Double Wide. Kick off your night with some real American Country music starring Dallas’ own Eleven Hundred Springs tomorrow, August 12th at the Granada Theater. Also enjoy music from Jesse Dayton and Amanda Shires. Eleven Hundred Springs has released eight albums since their 1998 debut. Live at Adair’s Saloon, the band’s 1999 release is considered to be one of the definitive albums of the late ’90s in the Texas music scene.
