Ava Hosts San Martino Vineyards

by Steven Doyle

Wine dinners are extremely popular with restaurants and is a simple concept. An ambassador for the winery, often the owner, will pay a visit to a restaurant who will host a special menu for that one evening. Certainly we enjoy these and try to make as many as we can to become more familiar with the wineries and take a more intimate look at the restaurant. Last evening was no exception as we joined the people of Rockwall’s Restaurant Ava for a look at a local Rockwall wine, San Martino.

As I discussed the variety served last night with owner of San Martino, Emilio Ramos, I was pleasantly surprised how perfectly balanced the wines were. Later I had a discussion with Ava’s chef-owners, Randall Copeland and Nathan Tate, and we compared notes. Randall was more familiar with the local winery, but I was not. We both agreed these wines were special.          Continue reading

New Pop-Up Restaurant

by Steven Doyle

There are many unique trends in food these days. Certainly the gastro pubs seemingly are on the forefront, as are the food trucks. One trend we follow more actively on craveDFW is the underground or pop-up restaurant.

We have a new discovery for those who enjoy dining at these intimate and somewhat clandestine culinary gatherings. Chef Nicole is no stranger to the Dallas restaurant scene, having worked at top shops in Dallas including Nana for chef Bombaci. Nicole graduated at the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco in 2003 and has since made her mark.  Continue reading

Two undisputed facts about Texans. We love tequila and we love tacos. This makes today’s news of the Camarena Tequila Taco Truck moving into the Dallas area so incredibly sweet. As the truck was making its way into the DFW area, the brand selected to work with the Commissary in One Arts Plaza as their local ambassadors. Almost daily you will find Commissary sous Phillip Vorkoper working the truck at various events across the city including Cowboy’s games, festivals, concerts and such. You will also see chef John Tesar making his brand of tacos in the truck quite a bit.       Continue reading

AWOL for AWOLNATION

by Brittany Finnell

For those who have a gaping hole in their album collection from burning all of their Kings of Leon records after the bands disappointing Dallas show, look no further for the next up and coming phenomenon to hit this great nation. AWOLNATION packed Dallas’ own Prophet Bar on Thursday to fans ranging from the hipster teen to middle aged lawyers. LA’s finest hit the stage with hard hitting sounds from their debut album ‘Megalithic Symphony’. For a band that dropped their first album only 5 months ago, they had the entire crowd singing as though these songs had been playing on the radio for years.  Continue reading

Genghis Khan: The Exhibition

by Crave Staff

An epic tale, the transformation of Temüjin – a poor, illiterate child – into Genghis Khan – one of history’s greatest conquers – is filled with brutality, cunning and intrigue. Born in 1162 AD, Genghis Khan’s early hardships included the untimely death of his father, the controversial execution of his half-brother, his imprisonment and torture at the hands of a warring tribe, the kidnapping of his young wife, Borte, and the violent and deadly rivalry between him and his sworn blood brother, Jamuka. These challenges shaped him into a brutal, yet visionary leader.

In 1206 AD he successfully united the Mongol clans and was given the title of Genghis Khan – Fierce or Oceanic Ruler. He solidified this unification by establishing a code of law or Yasa which brought order to the Mongolian steppes, and prepared his people to wage war with civilizations beyond Mongolian borders.  Continue reading

Get Ready For Hatch Peppers!

by Steven Doyle

It’s time to gear up once again for one of our favorite times of the year, Hatch Chile Season. No one does Hatch Chile’s better in Dallas than Central Market with all the grandeur deserving the flavorful pepper.

For those that participated in the season last year know it was a particularly spicy season with even the mild versions having an extra bit of kick. It will be interesting to see how the weather this year affects the peppers on the Scoville front.

This will mark the 16th season for Central Market since they first fired up their first batch of chilies creating a great stir that has continued to gain momentum as one of the market’s top festivities. Continue reading
