Holiday Vignettes: Rusty Fenton

by Steven Doyle

Rusty Fenton is a veteran in the restaurant industry. As one of the original principals of Uncle Julio’s, Fenton has gone on to a magnificent career in the industry. He had a hand in Stephan Pyles’ Taqueria Cañonita, and also in the reanimation of the Trader Vic’s in the Palomar Hotel in Dallas.

More recently Fenton entered the taco trade. As owner of Rusty Taco, Fenton successfully runs the new franchise at the original location located on Greenville Avenue, and plans to open several other locations in 2012. Currently he owns or licenses four locations.   Continue reading

Wachu TacoBot Willis: Our 5 Best Gourmet Tacos of the Year

by Danielle Leahy                photos by Jacque Manaugh

Before I begin my year end review of the top 5 gourmet tacos in Dallas I’d like to offer a few caveats. First of all I’m not a food reviewer, I’m a taco club founder and manager. I bring groups of people together (often strangers) to eat tacos and have fun. Most of the places we visit are because they have been recommended or have recieved plenty of buzz. The locations must be able to hold groups of twenty-plus Tacobots. That alone can cross a lot of the smaller taco stands, gas stations, or far away locations off the list.

That said I present to you what are in my opinion the five best gourmet tacos in Dallas as well as some my favorite places to grab a taco in the city. These are the locations the Tacobots had the most fun and enjoyed the best, and isn’t that what it’s all about? If you are looking to try something new or have friends in town wanting to see what Dallas has to offer on this burgeoning nation food trend of upscale tacos might the Tacobots suggest…       Continue reading

Wachu Tacobot Willis: Fuel City

by Danielle Leahy     photos by Jacque Manaugh

If Dallas street taco lover’s had a Mecca, Fuel City  would be it. Even for all the naysayer’s at trip, at the least, is a requirement to judge the state of taco affairs in our City. Fuel City has long been called Dallas Best Street Tacos and, for the most part, started the gas station taco trend in Dallas as we know it. But what’s beyond the hype? Are the tacos really that good? Well with the all new covered patio  in place that seats 70 the Tacobots decided to invade the parking-lot and find out the truth for themselves.

First, you should know about Fuel City is it is cash only so don’t get in line (and yes there is ALWAYS a line) before you visit the ATM located just a few feet down from the outside window.     Continue reading

First Look: Mr. Mesero

by Steven Doyle

Mico Rodirguez is back and blazing guns at his new restaurant, Mr. Mesero. The quaint former location of the ill-fated Burger Girl located at 4444 McKinney Avenue holds a dozen four-top tables with an additional communal table outside that seats about twelve people.

I stopped by Mesero today for a bite and found the food much different than I had imagined. There were some Tex Mex items, but the menu also had a Mex Mex aspect as well.         Continue reading

Wachu TacoBot, Willis? The Cedar’s Social

By Danielle Leahym         photos by Jacque Manaugh

The Cedar’s Social is one of the most buzzed about restaurants in Dallas this year. With is dark, sexy 70’s throwback interior, amazing and exhaustively researched drink menu, and ownership by former NFL player Brian Williams there are lots of reason The Cedar’s Social keeps popping up in the news around town, not the least of which has to do with it’s food. The food here is very good, in many cases great. Sure it can be on the pricey side but many agree what it might lack in affordability it more than makes up for in ambiance, mood, music, and execution.

If you want a romantic date night that doesn’t feel traditional, campy, or old fashioned The Cedar’s Social is the place for you. If you want some of the best drinks in town made by the some of the best bartenders in DFW, then The Cedar’s Social is the place for you. But what if you want tacos? Well thank God for The Cedar’s Social $2 Taco Tuesday’s because in this most holiest of food genres, The Cedars Social also has you covered.       Continue reading

What’s for Supper, Grandpa?

by Steven Doyle

I am not sure if you have seen any of the old reruns of Hee Haw that will pop up on television on the occasional Saturday afternoon, but there was a segment where a character named Grandpa Jones would rattle off a litany of crazy country cooking  and pronounce it supper. The last few days seems like it has been a similar feeding frenzy. A burger here, a whole fish there, and a few cups of pho to settle it all in for the day.

I thought it might be interesting to show a few photos of what I have had over the past week. If you have some recent food shots you wish to share with the craveDFW audience, feel free to send them our way with a description.   Continue reading

Wachu Tacobot, Willis? Chuy’s

by Danielle Leahy

Chuy’s has long been a Knox-Henderson Ave staple. Known as much for it’s quirky interior and awesome happy hour as it’s food we visited this time with a Mission: Tacos.

I have a confession to make readers, I love crunchy tacos. Long lamented as the white-boy bastard of the taco family, crunchy tacos are usually considered kids food or worst (a Taco Bell menu item) by true taco lovers. And while I have accepted my fate in this soft shell world I do relish the opportunity to eat crunchy tacos that have arrived at my table without being handed to me thru a drive-thru window.     Continue reading
