by Steven Doyle  photos by Robert Bostick

This past Monday the alpha team of Stephan Pyles and Matt McCallister were back in the kitchen, knife-to-knife, cooking for a special dinner to benefit 5,000 families in the community of Chizavane, Mozambique. All the proceeds raised will bring water to the village and save lives by building a well that will bring life-giving water to these families.

Family Operated Mangiamo Opens In North Dallas

by Steven Doyle

A new restaurant just opened in the former Opa Grille location at 12827 Preston Road in north Dallas. We stopped in for a bite of lunch pizza recently to check out the new digs and speak to the owner Luigi Nicci and his family.  The restaurant has been open for two weeks and served up what might be considered typical Italian fare. You have your pizza, pastas and the ever loving eggplant parm.    Continue reading

Own A Piece Of The Mecca

by Steven Doyle

August 12, 2012 is the last day for the long standing Dallas institution, the Mecca, located on Harry Hines when they shutter and move across town to the Lakewood area of Dallas. If you would like to own a piece of that history you can join them at the restaurant at 2:30pm Sunday when they auction off their bar-stools.

Do you have a great memory of the Mecca you wish to share?

I caught up with Jose just off the heels of a taco inspection at a local taqueria in Oak Cliff. The restaurant swore they had puffy tacos and were well worth inspection. Jose differs with their assessment and you are sure to read about the restaurant soon on his Taco Trail website.   Continue reading

Indonesian Prog, Aikido, & CrossFit: Plane Ride to Jersey

by Dr. Spin

On the plane ride to aikido summer camp in New Jersey, I spent some time with a compilation called Those Shaking, Shocking Days. This is a collection of Indonesian progressive and psychedelic rock that I have struggled with since January. The existence of the scene that produced this music is a fascinating example of musical resistance in an oppressive regime. As it exists out of context, however…find the context over at The Pharmacy
