National Tequila Day, July 24th: Ultimate DFW Guide

National Tequila Day is more than an excuse to raise a glass—it’s a moment to appreciate one of the world’s most distinct spirits, born from volcanic soil, centuries of cultivation, and agave plants that take years to mature before their piñas are cooked, crushed, and distilled into that unmistakable complexity we know as tequila. True tequila comes only from designated regions of Mexico, most famously Jalisco, and must be made from blue Weber agave. What sets tequila apart from other spirits is its layered character—ranging from the green vegetal notes of a Blanco to the caramel, vanilla, and oak found in an Añejo, shaped by time spent in barrels.

A Visit to an Old Friend: Hererra’s Cafe

Herrera’s in Oak Cliff is more than a surviving restaurant—it’s the living core of a once-sprawling dynasty. Over the years, as various Herrera family members stepped away or closed their doors, the lineage has narrowed, leaving just this location to carry the torch. But what remains here isn’t a shadow—it’s the full-bodied heart of classic Dallas Tex-Mex, heavy on flavor, memory, and tradition.

Herrera’s was founded in 1971 by Amelia Herrera on Maple Avenue where the Grapevine was once located, and was so popular there were lines out the door where people would sit on ice chests full of beer waiting their turn at some killer enchiladas. Retro Movie Review: “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” -1953

Few films shimmer with the glitter and glee of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes—a Technicolor marvel that proves brains, beauty, and charm can share the same spotlight. Directed by Howard Hawks and released in 1953, this musical comedy serves as both a celebration and sly satire of materialism, friendship, and the social mores of its era. With Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell lighting up the screen in perfect comic contrast, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is more than a sugar-coated romp—it’s a sparkling showcase of wit, song, and scene-stealing performances.
