Crush Taco Makes A Limited Soft Shell Crab Taco You Won’t Want To Miss

crushby Steven Doyle

Chef Mo Assi is now a taco man up north in far Frisco. The days of fine dining in a traditional sense are behind the good chef, and today it is all about the taco. Crush Taco, that is.

Assi once told me that the tortilla is merely a vessel to hold what good creations he could come up with. Last year he made me a chicken fried steak taco after discussing what a great holiday CFS made. Assi was already one of my heroes, but did he have to go ahead and do that? Worship status issued.   Continue reading

Tucked inside the Decorative Center at the corner of Oak Lawn and Hi Line Drive, Sassetta joins Wheelhouse and soon to open Go Go within the newly constructed 10,000-square-foot complex designed by the renowned Seattle-based architectural firm Olson Kundig.  Articulating the space is Center Court, a covered outdoor pavilion featuring the commissioned 18-foot sculpture Moving Figure by notable New York artist Daniel Arsham.

Open for dinner with breakfast and lunch forthcoming, Sassetta’s seasonal modern Italian menu features handcrafted pasta, house-cured meats, seafood and thin crust pizzas in a casual café atmosphere.  Complementing the rustic fare is a robust selection of wines from various regions in Italy, along with amari and simple, straightforward Italian cocktails.   Continue reading

Eat Me: Soft Shell Crab at Stock and Barrel

SONY DSCby Steven Doyle

We are still in full swing soft shell crab season, and this is a good thing. Better restaurants and seafood hubs are flying in fresh, live soft shells ready for frying. Blue crabs are most common. The tender beasts shed their shells this time of year and make ready for a newer, larger shell leaving them vulnerable for my plate. Fortunately, the season can last as late as September.

If you find soft shells at one of your favorite fishmongers, and please avoid department stores which might offer a mealy previously frozen version, they should already be prepped for frying. Generally we enjoy a simple toss in seasoned flour and they are ready to be pan fried. Deep fried is acceptable but the pan version seems to carry more flavor.   Continue reading

Where to Dine in Lake Highlands – Pt 1

VG Doubleby Joey Stewart

While much of Dallas lies flat, the northeast Dallas collection of subdivisions known as Lake Highlands offers a unexpected setting of hills, valleys, woods and streams. Most of the area is served by the Richardson Independent School District, which makes it an enticing place to live for parents who are looking for an alternative to DISD or would rather not pay to send their little ones to private schools.

However, within the LH borders it can be a challenge to find restaurants offering the variety of choices of the surrounding areas. Sure, one can head a few miles west to Preston Hollow, south to Casa Linda, or directly north of 635 for a plethora of options, but for those who wish to stay within Lake Highlands “proper,” we’ve compiled a short list for you to enjoy. Some of you may already be in the know, but we bet there are a few here you have never thought to try. We will spotlight these a few at a time, and here are today’s picks. Click on the individual photos to expand. Continue reading

High Five Celebrates 2 Years on June 8th

high fiveby Steven Doyle

A fun hot spot that is a wee bit hidden on McMillan and Henderson is High Five. We gave them some love when they first opened and have continued to enjoy this tight atmosphere that is neither pretentious or self-indulgent.

June 8th High Fives celebrates two years on the grid and will feature live music and a DJ, a tot eating contest ($250 for the victor), a dunk tank and much more fun and high jinks. There will also be complimentary high fives given for those in need of positive affirmation.

To enter the contest please email Marc@highfivesdallas.com, this should be fun.
