We Love The Truck Yard For So Many Reasons

DSC00820by Steven Doyle

The Truck Yard is an overwhelming smash success you go by mere body count each night, including those precarious evenings when most stay huddled at home watching television, or manicuring their cats. Last evening we checked out the food truck park located on the sizzling hot Lowest Greenville Avenue area directly south of Trader Joes on Sears Street. The recent flack that Dallas Morning News critic shoveled at the venue made us even more excited to sit and sip, since we seem to have polar opposite ideas on what is fun to do and chew in Dallas.

The ice cream vendor Carnival Barker was easily found directly at the front facing Trader Joes just under the giant neon ice cream cone. Plenty of guests were able to locate and devour the house-made ice cream as when we visited about 7pm last night the owner was fresh out of product. Aaron Barker stated that he has been upping the amount of ice cream he makes each day and is now looking for more equipment to keep up with demand. He did have a handful of frozen bananas for sale, and we all know that there is always money in the banana stand.  We have tasted the Barker ice cream on numerous occasions and love the stuff. Plenty of fun, inventive flavors when they are in stock. Continue reading

Carnival Barker May Open Saturday

aaron1by Steven Doyle

Aaron Barker is one cool cat. Although he had to sit the summer out from making his marvelous ice cream, you know Carnival Barkers, he is turning the final corner to opening his shop off of Greenville Avenue where you can enjoy his product. Aaron had to shut down his business after a state official bullied him into buying a rather expensive pasteurizer, which he did and will only elevate his ice cream even more.

Now Aaron and his partner Sarah Miller are ready to swing open the doors at their shop located at 5624 Sears Street just off Greenville next to the new Trader Joes. The ice creamery is actually located in Jason Boso’s Truck Park. This is where Boso will be selling hand carved Phillie Cheesesteaks and allowing a select few food trucks in each day to hawk their goods. This is also home to that soon-to-be famous tree house bar. Ahh booze and tree houses, sounds idyllic, eh?   Continue reading

BonChon Chicken Opening On Greenville Ave

bonchon-chickenby Steven Doyle

Press release of the day tells us about Bon Chon Chicken which just penned a 4,500-square-foot lease at the northeast corner of Greenville Avenue and Lovers Lane in Dallas. The first BonChon Chicken restaurant opened in 2002 in Busan, Korea. The first location in the USA was in Leonia, New Jersey. It later spread to California, New York, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Virginia.

Korean style fried chicken does not rely on blue cheese and celery sticks, or even biscuits and gravy. Instead expect cubes of pickled radish, beer and soju.  Continue reading

Nora Celebrates One Year In Business With New Cocktails, A Rooftop Party, And More

DSC09246by Steven Doyle

Restaurant Nora celebrated their one year anniversary with little fanfare last month as they are busy preparing for their new rooftop patio, which seems to be all the rage on Greenville Avenue. We certainly have enjoyed what HG Sply Co. has done with their roof, and from that vantage you can peer onto the goings on as that project progresses.

I did have a chance to take a first-hand look at Nora’s roof and it is simply amazing. There already is this amazing stone floor in place that is beautiful, and Matt Pikar is working on setting up a street-side staircase for easy access.  Pikar’s private dining room is a showcase for the restaurant and already has hosted many weddings and other parties. This just in time for the holiday parties.   Continue reading

craveRADIO: July 28, 2013

This past Sunday on craveRADIO we hosted several amazing guests including Elias Pope, one of the owners at HG Sply Co. located on lowest Greenville Avenue. We discussed what the whole paleo diet is, what it isn’t, and he shared some of the more delicious items on the menu. Be sure to taste that lamb shank, it is a giant ball of lamb goodness.

Elias also discussed HG’s philosophy on culling ingredients from local sourcs, something that is extremely popular these days. But Elias has a different take on local, and goes extreme when possible, including tapping into local resources to set up his beer selections (thank you Stephanie Roethlisberger from the Bottle Shop) and a special cocktail temptress to concoct that menu (nods to Emily Perkins at Victor Tango).   Continue reading

The Blind Butcher Faces Opposition

blind butcherBy Scott Shtofman

Yesterday, the City Plan Commission voted on a Special Use Permit  application for The Blind Butcher.  The restaurant is an upcoming Lower Greenville concept from Matt Tobin and Josh Yingling, of Goodfriend Beer Garden & Burger House fame.  The permit in question would allow the restaurant to stay open until 2AM, as opposed to being forced to close at midnight.

Given the Texas weather, patios have gained popularity, and become an integral profit center for many local restaurants and bars.  The current design for The Blind Butcher shows an interior seating space around 800 square feet, a front patio around 330 square feet, and a rear patio around 2,050 square feet.  This rear patio is where the main discussion was focused during the meeting.    Continue reading
