Meet Bartending Luchador Jesse Powell

20150303_202515_1by Steven Doyle

I have been checking in at Scotch and Sausage as of late and enjoy how chef Joey Allette has kicked up the menu with his fresh take, and of course always into a good scotch or whiskey. But as we reported a few weeks past, the front of Scotch and Sausage has been converted into S&S Tequileria, preparing some tasty tacos and serving up, of course heady tequila cocktails. The cocktails were of particular interest due to their unusual flavor combinations, and lack of that cloying sweetness that so many margaritas seem to take on. These are instead smooth, creamy and extremely well balanced. To find out more we went to the source, barmen Jesse Powell.

Before working at Scotch and Sausage, and Powell has been with the restaurant from the very beginning, he was working at an Addison sports bar. Prior to working in Dallas he had been in Wichita Falls. We chatted up Powell to find out more of his background and the thought behind some of these delicious drinks he is now serving up at S&S.    Continue reading

Tequila Aged Beers Event At Goodfriend Feb 23

tasting 2by Jennifer Thomas

Goodfriend Beer Garden & Burger House partners with Lakewood Brewing Co. and Puro Verde Tequila for “¡Ay Dios Amigos!” to release very special beers aged in Puro Verde barrels on Sunday, February 23, 2014. Hosting an all-day event, goodfriend will be the only place to get this world premiere beer. Live music will begin at 3pm featuring Hazardous Dukes, Psycho Pony, and Hell Texas.

This event is a year in the making. Carlos Bell, the general manager at Goodfriend, asked Trey Baumgarner, the owner of Puro Verde Tequila, for four of their Añejo Tequila barrels for Lakewood Brewing Co.  Along with Bell, Matt Tobin, Josh Yingling from Goodfriend and Craig Reeves from Puro Verde Tequila delivered the barrels to Wim Bens from Lakewood Brewing Co. to begin the aging process.  Two barrels of Lakewood Lager (Vienna-style Lager) and 2 barrels of La Dame Du Lac (Bierre de Garde), part of the Lakewood Legendary Series were aged in the Tequila barrels for nine months. A couple of months ago, all parties involved came together for a taste test.   Continue reading

Sample Clooney’s Casamigos Tequila Tonight At Del Frisco’s Grille

casamigosby Steven Doyle

In January George Clooney and longtime friend, bar and restaurateur Rande Gerber, partner with Discovery Land Company CEO & founder Mike Meldman launched Casamigos Tequila. Casamigos Tequila with select nationwide distribution.

Casamigos Tequila is a small batch, ultra-‑premium tequila made from the finest, hand-‐selected, 100% Blue Weber agaves, which are grown in the rich, red clay soil and cool climate of the Jalisco Highlands of Mexico. Our agaves are harvested after maturing for a minimum of seven years, and are hand chosen for size and quality. They are then taken directly to the distillery and processed within 48 hours so as not to lose any of their properties. Our master distiller use a proprietary yeast blend to ensure the most refined tequila. Following that is an extra slow fermentation process, which takes 80 hours to complete (and is double the industry standard), and the use of bagasse from our agave, which results in a deep, rich flavor, and produces a tequila that is smooth with no burn.    Continue reading

Clase Azul Tequila Celebtrates A Fitting 15th Anniversary

IMG_1036by Andrew Chalk

The ultra premium tequila brand Clase Azul recently celebrated 15 years of being in business. In planning the event, the creative and business management of the company went back to first principles. They stood for authenticity, supporting the traditional crafts of Mexico, and acting in a sustainable manner. For example, every bottle of Clase Azul is different, because it is hand made. Over 100 artisans in a single town mold, paint and decorate each bottle. Non toxic ceramic paints and hand made brushes are the tools and equipment, and each bottle takes a full two weeks to complete. The final article is a work of art and if you buy a bottle start your own collection.   We use Pop Events for all sorts of functions. Continue reading

A Gran Patron Dinner At Abacus

patron1by Steven Doyle

Last evening Kent Rathbun held one of his famous dinners, this time surrounded by the people from Patron who offered some amazing pairings with Rathbun’s surprisingly unusual food. Walking  into the restaurant I was thinking ‘Mexican’ to match up to Patron Tequila, and that would certainly work for Abacus which serves up world cuisine. But instead of just going to the immediate south of the border, we were treated to full-on pan-Latin cuisine, which took elements from Spain, South America and yes, Mexico.          Continue reading

Don Julio Comes To Lazaranda

IMG_1831

by Andrew Chalk

I just read a restaurant review by a famous critic whose prose makes mine sound like a garbage truck being shoved into reverse. He argued that great meals are made not by the food, or the beverages, but by the ‘whole milieu’ in which one enjoys it. The location, the company, the sense of accomplishment from endeavors earlier in the day. From kind remarks one heard. Maybe it was a combination of those things that made tonight’s tequila dinner at Lazaranda  in Addison so enjoyable. According to famous critic, I could have replaced the food with a TV dinner, the Don Julio 100% blue Weber agave tequila with battery acid, and the evening would have been just as adorable.    Continue reading
