Ten Great Seafood Towers in Dallas

A 16747by Steven Doyle

Always on the hunt for something overwhelmingly delicious, a stop to study the local seafood tower scene in Dallas is a fantastic assignment that ferreted some pretty marvelous results.

A Plateau de Fruits de Mer, or the tower we are in search of is a seafood dish of raw and cooked shellfish served cold on a platter, usually on a bed of ice. The serving platter is generally held above table level with a stand and sometimes can contain multiple, elaborate tiers. This is both for visual effect, and because the shellfish are often served in the shell, or on the half shell, which causes them to take up a large area while containing only a bite or two of meat.   Continue reading

You Can Finally Get Poke in Dallas! (Don’t Read That Too Fast…)

poke1by Rhonda Dutton   photos by Joey Stewart

Being a Texas gal with island roots, Poke runs in my veins (along with BBQ sauce and cream gravy, but that’s beside the point). Growing up spending summers in Maui, Poke was sold in the grocery stores and served as an appetizer at family gatherings. Now, as a food-loving adult, I enjoy how the custom poke bowl craze has given poke as personal a profile as burgers and pizza. However, the “Chipotle of raw fish” is not what Jon at TJ’s Seafood Market & Grill aimed to do with his take on the trendy dish. Jon traveled the Cali eaterways and determined that he wanted to provide a top-notch poke option to his “Best Seafood in Dallas” repertoire. And he nails it.   Continue reading

Lobster in the Winter

tjby Judy Chamberlain

A heap of Maine lobster on a buttery bun with a side of Caesar salad rocks any time of year, and nobody does it better than seafood guru Jon Alexis at TJ’s Seafood Market. This is the petite size. I add mayo, which Jon says is not the way the original Connecticut lobster roll was made when it was invented near the turn of the last century.

By the time I was growing up in the Nutmeg State, the cold version with mayo and celery had become more popular than the original. Thanks to Jon, I am able to pass along to you the real story. Who else tells you these things?

Top 8 Places to Enjoy Gumbo in Dallas

Image:by Steven Doyle

Gumbo is that delicious pot of stew that starts off with a roux, that chocolate brown thickener that gives gumbo its distinctive hue and rich flavor. In New Orleans a meat-based gumbo may consist of chicken, turtle, duck, squirrel, rabbit or alligator. Seafood-based gumbo generally has shrimp, crab, and sometimes oysters. Most varieties of gumbo are seasoned with a special mirepoix consisting of onions, bell pepper, and celery, or what they call the Holy Trinity. Today, most people are familiar with seafood gumbo and chicken and sausage gumbo.

Let’s check in to some of our favorite places in Dallas that make a mean bowl of gumbo. Continue reading

Tacos At Home Courtesy Of TJ’s Seafood Market

Steve_Jill_2by Steven Doyle

I am often asked since I dine out so frequently if I ever cook at home. The answer is yes, and I am quite capable. But the fact is I dine out nearly every meal, and I do miss cooking at home. But as fortune would have it I had a chance to do just that when a friend invited me over this week.  But I cheated a bit by stopping in at TJ’s Seafood Market for a little assistance.

I dropped by the TJ’s for a little friendly advice from my favorite fishmonger, Jon Alexis. Alexis suggested for light bites to grab some jumbo shrimp that they prepare fresh each day, and maybe a bit of their signature smoked salmon and large lump crab. This sounded perfect for an evening of wine and conversation, and decided to make tacos out of all the ingredients. Little was I aware but these would be the best tacos that mankind has ever known, I humbly submit. Continue reading

First Look: TJ’s Seafood Market New Location at Preston-Royal

jonby Steven Doyle

One of our favorite seafood restaurants and markets started in their tiny digs at Preston and Forest back in 1989, and founded by Tom Haden and Jim Kearnen (thus the T and the J).  The pair retired ten years later making way for the new owners, Pete & Caren Alexis who appreciated the shop since its inception. The family promised to maintain its values and excellence in quality and service. In 2009, Jon Alexis took over as the “third generation” owner of TJ’s Seafood Market.   Continue reading
