Copper River Salmon Season Starts May 15

We rely on a few local sources for a seafood knowledge, TJ’s Seafood Market in Dallas and Sea Breeze in Plano. Today Jon Alexis owner of TJ’s reminds us that it will soon be Copper River salmon season. Look for the delicious and rich fleshy fish with that creamy, omega-3 rich fat to start arriving May 15th. TJ’s Seafood Market Moving Forest Location To Preston Royal

TJ’s Seafood Market is one of our favorite spots in Dallas to find fresh seafood. Th location at Preston and Forest has been servicing Dallas for 25 years, and has been a fantastic spot for unusual species of seafood with exemplary quality. We also enjoy the location on Oak Lawn that allows us to select our seafood fresh from the cold case and dine on location. Today we learned that TJ’s will be moving their flagship store at Preston-Forest to a new location at Preston and Royal in the North East shopping center, the former Purple Cow restaurant.   Continue reading

2014 Top Ten Places To Find Crawfish In Dallas

We are at a slow start for crawfish season with the untimely cold snaps that are hitting the haunts where the mudbugs hang out. The little critters aren’t wanting to come out of their roost and onto our plates, bu that just means they are getting bigger and tastier. For now we will suffer through extremely medium crawfish, and that is OK for now. We have already been scoping out the latest hot spots for the 2014 season, and we have plenty to share. Notice a few newcomers on the list this year that will excite your palates with their rendition of the spicy crustaceans.

An Appellated Gulf Oyster?

Eaten a gulf oyster recently? Where, in the thousands of square miles that constitute the Gulf of Mexico, did it come from? You probably were not told. The person who sold it to you probably did not know. I never considered it mattered before.

It turns out it does. Where in the gulf an oyster grew up affects its size and taste. If we know where oysters come from, we can choose between them based on quality, or size, or flavor profile. If we choose oysters from particular locations then oystermen will know what types to harvest.    Continue reading

TJ’s Collaborative Lionfish Dinner At Driftwood

TJ’s Seafood and Driftwood held Dallas’ first ever Lionfish Dinner on Monday night, treating guests to five courses paired with wines. This invasive species, which is native to the Indo-Pacific, has found its way to the southeast coast of the U.S., Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico.

TJ’s owner and seafood guru, Jon Alexis, started off the evening informing diners of the issues surrounding the fish. “Lionfish have no predators, can lay up to 40 thousand eggs every three days, and eat anything and everything they can fit into their mouths. However we can become its predators. By eating them!”    Continue reading

Lionfish Collaboration Dinner With TJ’s And Driftwood

Monday, January 13, TJ’s Seafood Market and Driftwood will present Dallas’ first lionfish dinner prepared by Chef Omar Flores. Together, TJ’s and Driftwood, along with Traditional Fisheries founder Dave Johnson (as seen on ABC’s Shark Tank), hope to introduce Dallas’ food purveyors, chefs and diners to this delicacy that is invading and destroying the North Western Atlantic and Caribbean.

Lionfish are non-native to the Atlantic and Caribbean, and while it is not certain how the species was introduced to these waters, it’s possible they are released aquarium pets. The invasion is incredibly dangerous to Atlantic and Caribbean ecosystems as lionfish eliminate organisms that fulfill important ecological roles within coral reefs. Native reef fish populations decrease by 80 percent when lionfish enter new areas. Dave Johnson found a solution to the problem – catch the fish and cook them.    Continue reading

Try TJ’s Seafood At Veritas

If you are a regular reader of craveDFW you know that we are super fans of TJ’s Seafood Market located on Preston at Forest Lane, and the new location on  Oak Lawn Across from Al Biernat’s restaurant. The reason is simple, the proprietor Jon Alexis flies his seafood in every day, all day. He buys in quantities that sell quickly so nothing remains each day. We liked our beef aged, but not our snapper.

Alexis has teamed up with the boys at Veritas Wine Room  (located on Henderson in Dallas) the third Sunday of each month to provide a lobster bake that includes a whole lobster,   potatoes, corn, clams, mussels, sausage, etc. for $30. That shindig starts at 5:30 on the third Sunday of each month. There are plenty f great beers or wines t pair this dinner up with, so don’t miss that.  But wait, there is a mega dinner planned or this weekend… Continue reading

Half Price Fish Tacos At TJ’s

The fish taco is one of the more elusive bites around the DFW area. TJ’s Seafood Market on Oak Lawn makes one of the better versions, and now there is something to celebrate. TJ’s recently announced a half price taco happy hour from 3 to 5pm each day, excluding Saturdays. You can always find a tilapia version, but there are also rotating tacos like monkfish, cobia, triggerfish and halibut to name a few.

Check out the soft shell crab tacos. These will definitely make you happy. 1/2 Price Fish Tacos Happy Hour, 3-5pm. Beat the heat with a cold beer and 50% off fish tacos.
