Week in Review: Scotch, In-N-Out and a Case of the Crabs

SpokesPup for Glenfiddich

by Steven Doyle

Another amazing week at craveDFW. Our statistics department claims that many of you love to read us, and its no wonder since the same department related that Crave readers have a 16% greater chance at finding love in a photo booth, and 33% likelier to have off-spring with above average intelligence.

I saw DMN Mr. Dallas out last night and he happily pointed out that this was the week of scotch tasting everywhere. I smacked my liver and thought for a moment and realized that it had been an exciting week for the spirit what with Glenfiddich, Dalmore and other brands sweeping through the city sampling their wares at various upscale venues and liquor stores in Dallas. It is not surprising since each of the distillers pointed out that Dallas buys more scotch than any city in North America.  Continue reading →

Estaban Vicente at the Meadows

In keeping with the Spanish theme for the next few weeks, we present an exhibition currently at the Meadows Museum at SMU.

Esteban Vicente (American, b. Spain, 1903-2001) arrived in New York about a decade before the movement known as Abstract Expressionism began to coalesce.  Amid American and European émigré artists, Vicente was exposed not only to a gamut of aesthetic philosophies, but also to the spectrum of artistic entourages in New York.   Continue reading →

Dinner With Spain’s Chef Arolo

by David Donalson

photos by Jackee Donalson

One of the more interesting aspects of Central Market is their cooking school. They have a kitchen set up in a room where chefs and staff can come in and do demos for customers. This is the area where Chef Arolo set up as part of his Passport Spain dinner last evening in Southlake.

Chef Arolo and his two Michelin stars may look intimidating but he was gracious with his time and has a great sense of humor. He started by saying how his “English may not be very good but it is easy to speak in the language of taste, of gastronomy.” Arolo described his cuisine as traditional, local cuisine with a focus on what is seasonally ready to eat. Sure he can dabble in the molecular but the focus is on tradition. He demonstrated this with a traditional fried potato dish served with a spicy red sauce and aioli called patatas bravas.  Continue reading →

Great Year For Soft Shell Crab

by Jon Alexis

Remember that scene in “Splash,” where Tom Hanks takes Daryl Hannah the mermaid out on a date?  The waiter sets a beautiful steamed lobster in front of her.   She stares at it, picks it up…and chomps right in, shell and all.

Now that’s a top-of-the-food-chain move.  Sharks don’t spit out bones. Anacondas digest whole goats.  But us humans, we tend to be a little pickier.

Besides the fact that they are delicious, maybe that’s why I crave soft shell crabs so much. Eating an entire animal sounds the call of the wild. Just because we don’t eat like a shark or anaconda (or 80’s Tom Hanks-smitten mermaid) doesn’t mean we can’t. Continue reading →

Hidden Taco Gem Found

by Bryan Coonrod

While roaming around The Harbor in Rockwall last Thursday during the concert series at the lake I started to get a little hungry but with so many people out there the sit down restaurants were pretty full. As I started to see if there were any street vendors there I came across a small taco stand called Tacos Del Potrillo a side business from it’s main restaurant called El Potrillo De La Sandia located on the North side of The Harbor by the large fountain. In-N-Out Crowd Speaks Out

by Steven Doyle

photos by Robert Bostick

The city went kooky yesterday as everyone was up in arms with two of the new In-N-Out burger locations opening their doors. We sent a reporter to be on the scene but he was mobbed — then rained on, almost as if Jesus was saying this was not a good thing and we should remember that whole flood issue back in the day. And it looked as if this was a page from that story as the plebs were lined up two-by-two for their chance at the burger-prize of the day.   Continue reading →

More Meat Jams Please

by Steven Doyle

There are certain things we eat that can expose the cook for who they truly are, and the Rib Jam at Lockhart Smokehouse in the Bishop Arts District does just that. Having recently tried everything on the menu including the new addition to the Lockhart line-up, the burnt ends, I can say that I have a new love in my life called Rib Jam.   Continue reading →

Veritas Wine Tasting – Bruno Rocca

by David Donalson

photos by Jackee Donalson

While most people were hiding from the storms on Wednesday, I took the opportunity to try some fantastic Italian wine by Bruno Rocca at Veritas Wine Bar in Dallas. Luisa Rocca, daughter of Bruno Rocca was on hand to pour four of the family wines: 2009 Bruno Rocca Dolcetto d’Alba “Trifole”, 2008 Bruno Rocca Barbera d’Alba, 2007 Bruno Rocca Barbaresco and 2007 Bruno Rocca Barbaresco “Rabaja”. If you have not had much in the way of northern Italian wine, this was a great introduction.  Continue reading →
