Seafood Shack Opens on Northwest Highway in Dallas

by Steven Doyle

For all my dive loving friends, I have some terrific news for you. The Seafood Shack on Webbs Chapel, just north of Forest Lane in Dallas has long been a spot to be in a crowd of Hispanic seafood lovers and to sample some pretty terrific dishes at a bargain rate. Seafood Shack has been known for their quarter oyster Tuesday (since been marked up to thirty cents), and daily specials that are true miserly treats. Do not fear the cheap oysters, they stay so busy they blast through these babies very, very quickly. In the world of oysters, that’s a good thing Continue reading →

A Christmas Carol And A Word About “Pay What You Can Nights” At Dallas Theater Center

by Steven Doyle

A Christmas in Dallas is not complete without seeing the Dallas Theater Center’s A Christmas Carol at the Kalita Humphreys Theater on Turtle Creek. We really do not get snow, and no one is about to roast a chestnut in the streets, so we grab our traditions where we can. We were about to announce the Pay-What-You-Can show set for November 20, but the it sold out in record time. We are listing other PWYC shows as a holiday gift to our readers. Continue reading →

by Steven Doyle

Bonefish Grill is making its way to the DFW with its first stop in Southlake, Texas. Bonefish may sound like a choking hazard, but instead it’s a pretty nice and casual restaurant born in St. Petersburg, Florida in 2000. They serve responsibly sourced seafood and gear into the fun department with live music in the ultra large 5,600 square foot venue.     Continue reading →

State of the Hot Dog Report

by Steven Doyle

Do hot dogs make you lose control? All year long we have been hearing about the hot dog moving in on the Dallas mainstays such as the almighty burger and cheap-to-eat taco. We have already witnessed new doggeries (I am selling this term to Webster, so feel free to use at will) such as Bowery and Jerry’s Wood-Fired Hot Dogs that is based in California.

My friend, Chef Johnny Carino called and left me a message this morning that he had heard that Jerry’s was now in Dallas and was planning a trip to the new store soon. Carino is somewhat a health fanatic, so those dogs must be pretty damned good to motivate him to actually eat one.   Continue reading →

The Jellyfish Family Tree Part 5: A Flashback for Benson

by Dr. Spin

I posted last year about my history with Brendan Benson’s catalog, but I left out a tidbit of information that only now, within the context of this Jellyfish project, gains relevance. It is true that I discovered his debut quite accidentally and purchased it sight on scene, but here’s the “LOST” flashback: When I cracked it open and began checking out the liner notes, I was stunned to find that several of the songs were co-written with Jason Falkner.

By 1997, Presents Author Unknown had already earned Falkner a spot in my all-time greats list, and listening to One Mississippi with an ear for his influence undoubtedly contributed to my adoration of that album. Benson became another of my power pop favorites, and I have loyally followed him ever since…   find a loyal following over at the pharmacy.

Ruthie’s Adds A Rolling Crepe Truck To The Line Up

by Steven Doyle

Ruthie’s Rolling Café is a triple threat in the Dallas food truck business. In a time when more than just a few trucks are rolling up their welcome mats and high-tailing it out of town, Ruthie’s continues to expand. As with any business, longevity is given to the very best. Ruthie’s has always been known for their quality sandwiches with their first truck which features above average grilled cheese sandwiches (try the BBQ filled grilled cheese for maximum impact).   Continue reading →

Four Corners Brewing Company Is Open For Business Q&A

by Steven Doyle

Another brewery has officially gone online in the Dallas area, this time from the Trinity Grove sec0tion of West Dallas which can be found just across the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge at 423 Singleton. The brewery will be strictly sold in brew pubs and kegged, but later will adopt another system which they anticipate as an aluminum bottle. Common Table cracked the first keg of Four Corners earlier this week, and a debut party was hosted at Good Friend last night.

The brewery is hosting a tour this weekend Saturday, November 17, 2012 from 12:30pm to 3:30pm, but that tour is already sold out.

We had a chance to speak to a pair of the owners; there are four members of this team in all thus the Four Corners. Here is a conversation with George Esquivel and brew master John Sims.   Continue reading →
