Owner Of DaLat To Open Pizza Resto Named ZaLat

News from the undisputed King of Late Night Pho, Khanh Nguyen owner of DaLat, says that he will open a late night pizza parlor next to his pho-riffic restaurant on Fitzhugh in Dallas. Nguyen will be taking over the former Pastazio’s location which closed in November of 2014 and situated next door to DaLat at 2519 North Fitzhugh Avenue. The restaurateur plans to name the pizza joint ZaLat, to open late nights and with delivery. Projected to open sometime in February.

ZaLat will be open from 5pm to midnight to start, with the ultimate goal of staying open until 4am. Nguyen said in an interview today that neighboring El Come Taco is looking at staying open late into the night as well, making that section of Fitzhugh a dining Mecca for service industry workers and the apres-bar crowd. He is also working with El Come to develop a pizza with a south-of-the-border flair, a street taco pizza made with al pastor. Other pies with an ethnic flair include a Reuben that he says is to die for, and might be better than its sandwich counterpart. We are particularly looking forward to a Thai pizza based on the meatball shooters served at DaLat.

The Evolution of South Carolina BBQ

eric1

by Chef Eric Spigner

At the base of Calhoun County, right where the Low Country of South Carolina begins is the town of Cameron. Here in this small town lived a tribe of Native Americans called Kusso-Natchez Tribe also known as Edisto Indians. This tribe lived along the Santee River around the late 1600’s the land along this river was purchased by an Englishman named Alexander Cameron who owned a 2,600 acre plantation in Abbeville which was given to him for his services in the French-Indian War.

Alexander Cameron purchased this land currently known now as Cameron, South Carolina for its abundance of pecan trees and the soil was perfect for the growth of cotton. Alexander would have some of his slaves come from the Abbeville Plantation to work on his newly purchased land to man cotton and pick pecans. During their stay on the land the slaves started to hunt and fish along the Santee River. This is when they encountered the Kusso-Natchez Tribe who they befriended and began to have an interesting relationship with.   Continue reading

The Back 9 In Addison Re-Opens With A Fresh Coat Of Paint And New Menu

DSC06572by Steven Doyle

The Back 9 in Addison closed shop for a few days to give the bar and grill a fresh coat of paint, and do a little remodeling. You will find the new space more inviting, and the food  a little more inventive. For those that travel to some of Addison’s hot spots and are not especially fond of the smoke, you will also find that the Back 9 has taken some measures to improved that situation as well, with added ventilation and a non-smoking area. In the next few days you will also some new furnishings that were held up by the snow storms in the East.

We checked in to the Back 9 to plow through some of the new menu, and enjoy an old favorite that is a bit over the top. The Friday Burger is definitely wacky with its juicy half pound patty, topped with bacon, fresh jalapenos, fries, cheese sticks and a fried egg for good measure. It is not for everyone, but for those that love a good challenge, this burger is for you. We asked one of the staff to help us eat the burger and it was actually larger than her head.   Continue reading

shell shackby Steven Doyle

The much loved Uptown seafood haunt, Shell Shack, is set to open its door in Plano sometime in March. The latest location is situated at Park and the Tollway, a popular hot spot for many new restaurants. We spoke today with one of the partners of Shell Shack, Dallas Hale, and he said that the equipment has already been delivered, all licenses were in place (typically the largest obstacle for any bar or restaurant), and he is just waiting for the build out to be finished and to train a new staff. This is exciting news for those that love spicy crabs, shrimp, and crawfish.   Continue reading

Craft Beer and Chili Cook-Off Set For Feb 8 In Trinity Groves

chiliby Steven Doyle

Although this has been an extremely mild winter in North Texas (so far), it is still the best time of year to enjoy a soothing bowl of spicy brick red chili. Look for the first chili cook-off of what the organizers trust will be an annual event in Trinity Groves at the 3015 event complex February 8, 2015 from noon to 5pm. Although not a sanctioned event, the rules are just as stiff with on-site cooking and a minimum of four gallons required for both a people’s choice and a judges panel award.   Continue reading
