Why John Tesar Should Be Voted Back On Top Chef

tesar1 002by Steven Doyle

I do not normally report on the whole Top Chef thing, we always assume our readers are out dining or sipping an amazing tequila, or hob knobbing with a few local bands on their day off. At least that is how I envision you all. However, this season has been particularly interesting with the addition of three talented local chefs.

Be there no doubt that I was all upset when Danyele McPherson from The Grape took her leave from the show just weeks ago. Danyele is talented, perky and a whole lot of fun. I met her first working with McCallister back at Stephan Pyles, and instantly took to her radiant personality. She is a class act and Top Chef could use a few more Danyele’s.   Continue reading

Hypnotic Donuts Invites Cheese-Beer Maven To Create A Special Chicken Biscuit

DSC04799by Steven Doyle

Ali Kay Hammer is back on our radar again, this time the Scardello cheese monger is getting her biscuit on at Hypnotic Donuts on Garland Road in East Dallas. If you recall, just a week ago Ali was rocking the Peticolas house during their first anniversary with her wedding to the beer Velvet Hammer.

Beginning tomorrow and at least through the end of the month of January, you can experience what it is like in Ali’s mouth by ordering her version of the chicken biscuit. This is an ongoing program at Hypnotic and there have been more than a few fun versions of the chef driven biscuit since owner James St. Peter decided to invite chefs to play in his wacky kitchen once a month. Last month we all enjoyed The Grape owner Brian Luscher’s homemade sausages in a bun, this month we see what Ali has to offer.     Continue reading

Playing with Music at Classical Open Mic

buzz2by Sally-Page Stuck

Buzzbrews Kitchen begins to fill. Students work on notebook computers. The after-work crowd relaxes over cups of coffee. Paintings of Bob Marley and Madonna stare down on a young man. He is practicing Handel’s aria, Lascia Ch’io Pianga.

Amid the restaurant clammer, somewhere around 8:00ish, Mark Landson wanders up to the stage, violin in hand. Dressed in a Sun Studios t-shirt, jeans and pleasantly worn black boots, he could be any dude hanging out at a coffee bar. Then, he starts to play the hauntingly familiar strains of Bach/Gounod’s Ave Maria. He plays with such loving intensity, he transforms into another Rudolfo, Puccini’s romantic leading man in La Boheme.         Continue reading

20 Feet Seafood Joint Slated to Open In About A Week

DSC04767 by Steven Doyle

Last night I caught up with chef Marc Cassel after noticing some heavy activity happening at his soon-to-open Peavey Road seafood restaurant, 20 Feet Seafood Joint. I spotted Cassel readying the space from my perch at Goodfriend and shot him a text asking for a few minutes when he was finished with his business. An hour later the chef grabbed me for a quick tour.

The restaurant will hold about 50 seats and should open in about a week. The time changed every time I asked him, so I stopped asking and settled with the answer I wanted to hear.   Continue reading

Although long time steakhouse tenant  Bailey’s locked up for good this week, new venues such as Bowl and Barrel, Grimaldi’s and Park Tavern recently opened. An announced future restaurant which has been anticipated  and owned by the same folks at Park Tavern is Boca Chica Tapas. Today we learned of yet another addition that is currently under construction, RAREContinue reading

Eat Me: Animal Tots At Park Tavern

DSC04731by Steven Doyle

I am a fan of poutine, but Dallas is in short supply of the unofficial Canadian national dish that is made up of house-made fries, fresh squeaky cheese curds and a rich brown gravy. In Canada you will find as many versions of the dish as you might find restaurants. From the best 5-star fine dining establishment to most any fast food chain carry the dish with their own special spin.

Today I discovered a unique version in Dallas at Park Tavern in the Shops at Park Lane across from Bowl and Barrel. One table mate insisted on ordering this for the group and what came out was nothing short of terrific.    Continue reading
