Graham Dodds Goat and Beer Dinner

grahamby Steven Doyle

Central 214’s Graham Dodds is one of our very favorite chefs in the Dallas and he is repeatedly raising the bar for fresh and local, but besides that his cuisine is truly innovative. If you know Dodds even the slightest bit you know he appreciates his goat.

This is why Dodds is teaming up with Texas favorites, Windy Hill Organics and Real Ale Brewing Company, for a delectable six-course Goat & Beer Dinner at Central 214 on Thursday, January 17, 2013.  Price is just $70 per person (plus tax & gratuity), including beer pairings.  Continue reading

The Demise of Bailey’s Prime Plus

baileysby Steven Doyle

Last week Ken Kuczwaj invited me to have dinner at the last Bailey’s Prime Plus located in the Shops at Park Lane. During dinner we chatted about how each location had closed, and that the last Bailey’s steakhouse would shutter January 1, 2012. It was a bitter, sweet meal we enjoyed as we savored the last remnants of our Wagyu tomahawk.

Bitter, because the restaurant was actually very good. Chef Ryan Carbery is quite talented and his hand in the kitchen will be missed.   Continue reading

Meet Mrs. Ali Hammer

ali5by Steven Doyle    photos by Thomas Garza

Our friend Ali Kay is off the market and freshly married to a fine beer, the Peticolas Velvet Hammer.  When we interviewed Ali for the original story where she announced her engagement we were at a restaurant, and our neighbors to the right of our table were horrified to learn that this young woman would marry a beer. The heart wants what the heart wants, and in this case Ali wanted a beer for life so she married one.   Continue reading

The Best of Dallas 2012

Blue Point Oystersby Steven Doyle

As 2013 swiftly moves into position, we took pause to review our photos from this past year selected some of our very favorite dishes, people and places. Looking back, 2012 was an excellent restaurant year for Dallas with many new openings that definitely elevated our palates. Innovators such as chef Matt McCallister are making Dallas a dining destination and will most assuredly be sought out with national culinary awards in the coming year.

This year brought us closer to the sea with forward thinkers such as Jon Alexis at TJ’s Seafood Market, Omar Flores at Driftwood, and John Tesar with his very new restaurant, Spoon. We also enjoyed a new rush of oysters in the Dallas area with the promise of even more in coming months. Look for the Establishment to open soon with 14 varieties on hand daily.

2013 should bring even more changes in the food community, but today we take you back to check out our list of favorites for 2012.  Continue reading

Blue Man Lands In Dallas

blue3by Steven Doyle

The Blue Men have arrived in Dallas just in time for a bit of holiday relief. Opening last night to a sold out crowd, The Blue Man Group will be appearing at the Winspear Opera House in the Art’s District through Sunday, December 30, 2012.

Being blue is not necessarily a bad thing; in fact it has its advantages. The Blue Men are seemingly able to delegate technology, fashion instruments from odd pieces of plumbing, and inspire an audience to shake, rattle and otherwise wag their booties to their rhythmic tunes. This latest incarnation of the blue stage show is rife with more humor and sight gags than previous versions I have encountered, and is perhaps a bit more family friendly and less rock concert. Bowery On McKinney Closed

SONY DSCby Steven Doyle

Not the type of news you might want to hear the day before Christmas, but a handful of employees of the hotdoggery on McKinney wrote in to say that Bowery has shuttered. No word from the owners just yet, but we will keep you updated.

Update: Word is that Bowery will be relocated.
