Bolivia Shuns McDonalds

by Steven Doyle

What would happen if we all stopped eating Big Macs? One Latin American country knows: they close their doors and go away.

After a powerful struggle and a 14-year campaign McDonalds decided to call it quits citing poor sales and low margins in a restructuring plan over seven countries. The company shuttered eight Bolivian restaurants in the major cities of La Paz, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz de la Sierra at year’s end. The fast food giant is simply unable to succeed in nations where the masses decry poor quality and mass production. These people are actually living proof that slow food can work en masse.   Continue reading

Lunches at Private Social Are Serene

by Steven Doyle

I stopped in to have lunch with a few friends at Private Social, the beautiful restaurant on McKinney in Uptown run by chef-owner Tiffany Derry. She is going three months into her grand opening and exudes excitement, and for good reason. The restaurant is successful and she has met with rave reviews (Dallas Morning News gave it the four star treatment).

I have been to the restaurant many times since the opening, once for a press luncheon, a few dinners on my own, and often make this a stop when out cocktailing for an evening. Bar manager Rocco always has a few concoctions to share, and it is good to pop in for a light bite and a sip or two of whatever he dreams up that night. Now is a fantastic time while he is making his house-made egg nog for the holidays.   Continue reading

Marquee’s New Burger Strikes Gold! (Literally)

by Steven Doyle

Highland Park’s personal top chef, Tre Wilcox sent a lovely missive via Facebook  that displayed some of his experimentation efforts in the kitchen. There isn’t a whole lot to add to the burger that will be sold at Marquee Grill that he didn’t already think about.

Wilcox describes this as a Short Rib-Foie Gras Stuffed Burger with gold leaf aioli, house pickles and truffle parm fries. There is little we can say after reading this, but “damn”.

Eat the Uber Burger, Make it a Double

by Steven Doyle   photos by Robert Bostick

In the short few months Uncle Uber’s Sammich Shop has been open the Deep Ellum restaurant has made quite a name for itself. They make a truly fine sandwich with pretty incredible ingredients. But in the past weeks we have been hearing tall tales about their burger and decided to launch a full-on investigation.

Uncle Uber is actually Bryan and Kathy Crelly, local restaurateurs that have run other successful operations such as Fat Ted’s, Pueblo Arriba, Rockwell’s Neighborhood Grill and Uptown Bar and Grill. These are no amateurs in the industry.   Continue reading

Shooters to Open in Victory, Cheap Beer and Tacos

by Steven Doyle

Pow. New restaurant opening in Victory in February 2012. Shooters will specialize in what they call gourmet and street tacos. They will also have burgers, wings and standard pub fare all under $10.  Their web site mentions cold, cheap beer. Something may just make it in Victory Park yet.  This is the La Condesa spot next to the American Airlines Center at 3030 Olive Street.

Social House Hits the Mark

by Steven Doyle           photos by Robert Bostick

Finding a really well crafted cocktail in Addison can be a bit precarious at best. There are a few hidden labyrinths for drinks including either of the Richard Chamberlain restaurants on Belt Line and now, as it would seem, Social House.

Checking in to check out Social House just a few months after opening we found a pretty damned good chicken fried steak. So good we included it on our list of top favorites in the city. But a more recent visit we enjoyed much more.      Continue reading

Mister Ed Says “Eat Me”

by Steven Doyle

Through out the world horses are a general source of meat. In Parma you may find pesto di cavallo, or a horse meat tartare, on the menu. In Austria you may find a type of bologna called Leberkäse, which sometimes can be made with horse, sold at hot dog stands. In China you may find a Donkey Burger on the menu, and in Japan it is common to see raw horse meat called basash which is thinly sliced and eaten raw.

In English speaking countries such as the United States, UK, Canada and Australia eating horse is taboo, but you just might start seeing Trigger or Mister Ed show up on your dinner table soon as it is now legal to slaughter horses for a source of food in the United States.  Continue reading
