Chef TJ Lengnick Cooks

by Steven Doyle

As a Steeler’s fan chef TJ Lengnick doesn’t have much to say about the Dallas Cowboys, but he does appreciate a good whiskey.

These are a few general things we learned about Lengnick, who is the top toque behind Whiskey Cake, as he shared some of his cooking techniques with an eager crowd at the most recent Duo cooking class. The order of the day was to prepare a few easy dishes in his upscale version of tailgating.                 Continue reading

Brackets New Chef Revamps Menu

by Bryan Coonrod

Can’t find a nice place to watch the games this year? Look no further than Brackets which could easily be a sports fans paradise with TVs every place your eyes can wander. Add in the specialty cocktails, impressive wine list and the mouth watering food then you might just be looking at your home away from home.

Originally starting out as a gourmet pizza restaurant Bracket’s has evolved in what they describe as an upscale eatery with a sports bar attitude. Chef Stefon Rishel has taken over and revamped the menu giving old sports bar classics a modern twist and just browsing the appetizers this becomes evident with items like braised short rib nachos and ahi tuna nachos.    Continue reading

One Art in Commissary Opens Tonight

by Steven Doyle

Today marks the opening of The Commissary’s  restaurant-within-a-restaurant One Art. We were fortunate to be part of the few to preview some of the offerings that the new restaurant will offer and will share the photos below.

It is interesting to note that unlike the One Art predecessor, The Table, there will be a few changes. One notable change is price. Chef-owner John Tesar noted last evening that the all night multi-course room wasn’t as successful due to the economy, and scaled the menu back by lowering price points, offering an ala carte menu, and sticking to more basic ingredients rather than the foie and caviar heavy approach he had before.    Continue reading

A Hidden Gem of a Burger

by Steven Doyle

Let me tell you about this new burger I tried this past weekend at the most unsuspecting place to have one. In fact, when I mention the name you will most likely think I am quite insane for even ordering this new-to-me burger. I spent my brunch time Sunday at Malai Kitchen, the cute West Village eatery that serves up a fantastic twist on Thai and Vietnamese food.  Continue reading

PB&J Burger at Twisted Root

by Steven Doyle

Dallas loves a great burger, and it seems the choice for one grows exponentially daily.  Yesterday I was tipped off to a particularly odd sounding burger they are making at Twisted Root, and I happened to be in Deep Ellum at the time feeling a bit peckish so I ducked into the restaurant in hopes of finding TW’s burger of the month, the PB&J.

Admittedly it sounds pretty bad at first. Peanut butter and jelly on a burger?  Happily as it turns out that is not the case. The ‘P’ does stand for peanut butter, but the ‘B’ is bacon and the ‘J’ is jalapenos. I am down for most of that.  The B and the J sounded pretty good at that moment as well.    Continue reading

What is BBQ?

by Bryan Coonrod

Labor Day has come and gone and one thing that has stuck in my mind is BBQ, not the delicious mouth watering type that my belly loves so much, but what others call BBQ. All weekend long I saw the social networks ablaze with people posting pictures of their grill. The only problem was that there was no BBQ to be seen in any of these photos, only burgers and hot dogs, steaks and fajitas.

When was the last time you had a barbecued hot dog? The pictures and invites continued through Monday all with the same theme ” Hey we are having a BBQ come on over” only no BBQ was offered.

I attempted to counter the influx of these faux BBQ invites and photos with a statement about what I believe BBQ to be ( brisket, ribs, sausage, pulled pork ) only to be barraged with more offers thoughts from others that BBQ was indeed burgers, hot dogs, steaks etc..  Continue reading

What You Didn’t See on craveDFW This Week

by Steven Doyle

Each week the various writers of craveDFW are hitting the streets with zeal looking for fun and interesting news to bring our readers. We feel the mix of contributors from restaurant industry professionals, artists, enthusiasts, and photographers keeps us on the cutting edge of the Dallas scene.

Many weeks there are articles written by other top-tiered food blogs that we wish we had written first. Because of these instances, we often choose not to re-write the same information you probably gleaned elsewhere. Starting this week we will mention those stories that interested us, and share the links as a service to our readers.  Continue reading
